LONG BEACH, Calif.—The American Optometric Association (AOA) has dedicated the Major Charles Robert Soltes, Jr., OD Department of Veterans’ Affairs (VA) Blind Rehabilitation Facility on the campus of the VA Long Beach Healthcare System. Named for U.S. Army Major Charles R. (Rob) Soltes, Jr., OD, the first Army optometry officer to be killed in action while on active duty, the new blind rehabilitation facility for America’s blinded veterans serves as an important step toward AOA’s mission of enhanced access to essential optometric services and improved quality of care for all veterans, particularly those with low vision.


Jobson Issues Blue Book of Optometrists 2012 Edition

NEW YORK—The 2012 Edition of the Blue Book of Optometrists, a comprehensive directory listing over 30,000 optometrists, is now available from Jobson Medical Information LLC. The directory is indexed into four distinct categories including, name, state, specialty and educational institution. In addition, the new directory has been updated with more than 12,000 changes.

Other highlights include information such as the AOA constitution, state regulatory boards, licensure by reciprocity, AOA bylaws and state optometry laws. Current resource listings in the directory include the Opticians Association of America, opticianry programs, world health organizations, optometry schools, paraoptometric programs, vision research centers, pediatric ophthalmology resources, and VOSH International. A calendar of events for 2012 is also included.

The directory is available in print or CD-ROM format and is available by ordering here for $115, while supplies last.

HO CORDOVA, Calif.—In a newly released study of career patterns among new optometry school graduates, VSP Vision Care surveyed optometry students during their third year in school along with their first year in practice, and discovered that 72 percent of respondents during their third year in school preferred to start their careers through private practice ownership, but only 15 percent of respondents became an independent eyecare professional practice owner in their first year of practice.
