“We are grateful for the student groups who joined the World Sight Day Student Challenge this year. These students have shown their concern for others and the funds they raised will go directly to our partners in the field who are providing sustainable eye care in currently 18 developing countries,” said Vic Connors, OD, CEO of Optometry Giving Sight, USA.

Students at the Illinois College of Optometry used the Giving Posters that were sent in their WSDC kit to create a friendly competition between the classes. Each class, 1st year through 4th year students, had their own poster and faculty members had their own poster as well. The students also sold cupcakes and T-shirts to raise funds; almost $2,000 was raised by ICO students for the
WSDC campaign.

“Although a lot of work went into making our fundraiser possible; the organization and cause speaks for itself. All we had to do was explain what Optometry Giving Sight was and where the money was going. It truly is a great cause and many of our students thought so as well,” said Barton D. Higley, Illinois College of Optometry student and
AOSA Trustee.

The Student Volunteer Optometric Services for Humanity (SVOSH) at Southern California College of Optometry (SCCO) took Optometry Giving Sight's World Sight Day Challenge to heart this year. The students set up a lunch-time fair with games and a raffle for students and faculty to enjoy.

“Our goal was to raise a school-wide awareness of the World Sight Day Challenge in a fun and exciting way. Students and staff got to donate their extra cash to play games and learn about how we in the optometry field can give back to people all over the world. We had fun planning it and SVOSH at SCCO raised $130 during our 60 minute lunch fair,” said Elise Swanson, co-president of the SVOSH chapter at Southern California College of Optometry.

The New England College of Optometry Lion's Club and the NECO students held three World Sight Day Challenge events: a bake sale, social event and a Halloween-o-gram fundraiser. In total, all three events raised $400 for Optometry Giving Sight.

“Students donated candy that was used to fill bags and sold for $1 each. The candy grams were hand-delivered to the students and faculty at school. It was a great way to get on the good side of the tough professors,” said Shilpa Verma, president of NECO Lion’s Club.
