DALLAS—The Essilor Vision Foundation (EVF) is hosting the Golf Classic 2010, a charity golf outing in honor of Paul Berman, OD on June 21 at the Nassau Country Club in Glen Cove, N.Y.

Berman, a New Jersey-based private practitioner, is well known for his work in the sports vision field. A former chairman of the AOA Section on Sports Vision, he has also served as a consultant for the U.S. Olympic Team, the N.Y. (N.J.) Giants, the N.J. Nets, and is currently the team Optometrist for the N.J. Devils. He founded Special Olympics Lions Clubs International Opening Eyes, and co-founded Healthy Athletes, a program dedicated to improving health care for persons with intellectual disabilities.

From his involvement in sports vision, he became interested in sports eye injury prevention and has become the director ofprofessional relations for Liberty Sport and chairperson of the Coalition to Prevent Sports Eye Injury. He is currently on the board of Optometry’s Charity—the AOA Foundation.

Berman has received many awards and honors. He was the World Council of Optometry Optometrist of the Year, the American Optometric Association Sports Vision Optometrist of the Year, and the New Jersey Society of Optometric Physicians Optometrist of the Year. He was honored to receive the Visionary Award from the Vision Council, the President’s Award and Global Ambassador Award from the Lions. In Shanghai, China he received the Sprit Award, the highest award of Special Olympics, along with some of his heroes, Nelson Mandela, Governor Arnold Schwartzenegger, Yao Ming, and Nadia
Comanici.

Berman recently returned from a medical mission to Haiti and is looking forward to working on establishing a permanent eye clinic in Haiti to provide vision care to those in needs, as well as in other needy places in the world.

The Golf Classic 2010 begins at 9:30 a.m. and includes lunch plus dinner, an awards presentation and a silent auction. EVF is offering sponsorships packages for the Golf Classic 2010 ranging from $150 to $2,400. All proceeds will benefit “the kids of New York,” according to EVF.
