Luxottica Kicks Off Ray-Ban Raw Sounds Project

November 14, 2011

NEW YORK—On Oct. 13, Luxottica officially unveiled the Ray-Ban Raw Sounds Project with a live event at The Angel Orensanz Foundation for Contemporary Art.

The event celebrates a project from legendary guitarist from The Smiths, Johnny Marr, and four young contemporary bands—Best Coast, Mona, Au Revoir Simone, and Tom Vek—collaborating on a musical experiment.

Inspired by Eno & Schmidt’s Oblique Strategies, Raw Sounds is a one off collaboration where Johnny Marr provided five song-writing inspirations to the groups and tasked them with writing their own track. The five inspirations were a poem written by Johnny Marr; a quotation from the German philosopher Schiller; a video of Johnny Marr playing a looped guitar tune; a photo titled Now Look! taken by Johnny Marr; and a map of NY’s Lower East Side.

“Ray-Ban Raw Sounds intrigued me from the outset: the idea of collaborating with emerging bands in an imaginative and not obvious way. Curating the five parts was a challenge—the elements had to be varied yet meaningful and inspiring,” said Marr.

The event in New York was headlined by Johnny Marr with his newly reformed band The Healers and supported by L.A.-based band Best Coast and Nashville native Mona with a DJ set by Au Revoir Simone. The evening was the first of three Ray-Ban Raw Sounds events across the world, including London and Hong Kong this month.
