LONDON—The World Council of Optometry (WCO) announced that it has launched a search for the International Optometrist of the Year for 2012. The award, presented to an optometrist who has made an outstanding contribution to the development of the profession worldwide, was last given posthumously to Tom Little, OD, who was killed in August 2010 while leading a humanitarian health mission in Afghanistan, according to the organization,.

“This award is a fantastic way for the global optometric community to recognize and celebrate the achievements of our friends and colleagues,” said Tone Garaas-Maurdalen, WCO president. “There are many optometrists around the world who make an outstanding contribution to the profession, and I urge our members to recognize their commitment by nominating them for this award.”

Nominations can be made online here and must be received by Feb. 24. The winner will be announced during the WCO conference, which will be held June 24 to 26 at the Blackstone Renaissance Marriott Hotel in Chicago, WCO said.
