New Optometry Student Mentor Program to Debut at Vision Expo West

August 22, 2012 12:15 AM

LAS VEGAS—International Vision Expo has added a new Optometry Student Mentor Program to its growing list of offerings. The program, which will officially launch at Vision Expo West, aims to ensure that optometry students gain the education and experience they need to make them successful in their future careers, according to show organizers.

Third- and fourth-year optometry students will have the unique opportunity to be paired up with a seasoned OD mentor, who will provide valuable guidance and advice as they navigate the conference. Show organizers believe the program will help to maximize the students’ time on-site; from education to networking to hands-on experience in the expansive exhibit hall.

“Our hope is that the Optometry Student Mentor Program enhances their Show experience,” said Kirk Smick, OD, FAAO, chairman of the International Vision Expo & Conference Advisory Board. “We have over 300 optometry students representing every school in the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico registered to attend International Vision Expo who would be thrilled and eager to have a doctor mentor who could be a resource to them.”

International Vision Expo recently joined the Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry’s (ASCO) corporate contributors program, which supports national programs and activities benefiting the schools and colleges of optometry. The growth of the Optometry Student Program has also enticed organizations to host meetings at the show, including the Association of Practice Management Educators (APME) and Student Optometric Leadership Network (SOLN). Optometry Student Program sponsors include: Alcon, Allergan, Hoya, and TLC Vision.
