American Optometric Foundation Names Student and Resident Award Winners

ORLANDO, Fla.—The American Optometric Foundation has named the winners of the Vistakon Residency Awards and the 2012 Award of Excellence in Contact Lens Care, both funded by Vistakon. Each winner of the Residency Awards receives $4,000 toward their graduate education, which includes a $750 travel fellowship to attend the Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Optometry in Phoenix, Oct. 4 to 7. Each winner of the Award of Excellence in Contact Lens Care receives $1,000 and a personalized plaque.

Winners of the George W. Mertz Contact Lens Residency Awards are Monica Roy, OD, MPH, The Ohio State University College of Optometry and Natalie C. Santelli, MAT, OD, Oregon Health & Sciences University/Casey Eye Institute University of Missouri, St. Louis College of Optometry. The Sheldon Wechsler Contact Lens Residency Awards go to Yin-Yin Aung, OD, New England College of Optometry and Cherie Nau, OD, Davis Duehr Dean Eye Care Illinois College of Optometry. The winners of the Terrance Ingraham Pediatric Optometry Residency Awards are Elizabeth A. Knighton, OD, University of Houston College of Optometry and Lernik Mesropian, OD, Southern California College of Optometry.

Recognizing outstanding clinical patient care as demonstrated by the students’ overall knowledge in the contact lens field and skillful, considerate and professional care of their contact lens patients, the 2012 Award of Excellence in Contact Lens Patient Care went to the following 19 fourth year optometry students: Erik Mothersbaugh, OD, Illinois College of Optometry; Sunni D. Stewart, OD, Indiana University at Bloomington School of Optometry; Lulu Massri, OD, Inter-American University of Puerto Rico School of Optometry; Andrea T. Sewell, OD, Michigan College of Optometry at Ferris State University; Crystal Meyer, OD, New England College of Optometry; Rosita Ghazanfari, OD, Northeastern State University Oklahoma College of Optometry; Ernesto Cepero, OD, Nova Southeastern University College of Optometry; Chad M.
