LONDON—In the wake of the cancellation of The Eye Show, originally reported by VMail on Jan. 31, 2013 and which was to have been held on Feb. 12 to 14 at the ExCel Exhibition Centre, event organizer Media 10 Ltd, in conjunction with eyewear designer Tom Davies’ (TD Tom Davies) Frame pop-up eyewear design event, will announce plans for a new international, London-based optical show. Frame will be taking place on Feb. 12 to 13 at The Vinyl Factory, The Courtyard, 16-18 Marshall Street.

“I'm delighted to be able to continue with a London-based event after The Eye Show crashed just a few days ago. I heard about the collapse from ic! Berlin owner Ralph Anderl and asked him if he would join me in a little pop up show on the same dates. I’d found a cool space, called three other brands and I already had an event planned,” said Davies. “My close friends at other eyewear brands around the world were feeling let down as we all have customers flying in and we were really looking forward to meeting our UK customers in London. By the next morning I had 10 more exhibitors asking me if they could join. Media 10 offered to help me out and given their track record, I felt it the best move to hand over the event to them so we can all benefit from a well-managed and supported fringe event.”

Confirmed exhibitors for Frame, being billed as “the alternative design event to coincide with former Eye Show dates” are: TD Tom Davies, ic! berlin, Cutler and Gross, William Morris, Oliver Goldsmith, Francis Klein, Hardy Amies, Colibris, Lumiere, Jono Hennessy and gotti Switzerland. “As of [Tuesday] morning,” Davies told VMail, “ I've been turning people down. It is really sad but the venue is not big enough and there is not enough time. We started with a gung ho spirit and an open door but now we have to be realistic about bothersome things like health and safety and capacity.”

Media 10’s managing director Lee Newton added, in comments to VMail, “Media 10 has been considering staging an annual London event in this industry for some time now. We did consider backing The Eye Show but felt there was too little time to make a difference. When we heard about the Tom Davies event, we felt compelled to offer our support. We’re experts in staging pop-up events here at Media 10 and Frame is the ideal event for us to announce our new international, London-based event. There is great industry demand for an annual event in London and we will announce our plans for launching such an event in 2014 at Frame in London.”

Media 10’S marketing manager, Saul Leese explained, “The pop-up event in London serves two purposes; it’s a launch venue for our new London optical event in 2014 and it demonstrates our commitment to support the eyewear design industry in the wake of the collapse of The Eye Show.”

This year, Frame is expected to attract buyers, opticians, designers and optometrists, in addition to many of the people that would have attended The Eye Show, for an estimated 500 to 1,000 visitors, many of whom have already paid for their trips to London. Visitors do not need to register prior to attending the event but are expected to fill in a brief form on entry.
