JACKSON, Mich.— TLC Eyecare & Laser Centers, an optical business that traces its roots to 1978, has changed the company name to Specialty Eye Institute. The new name is a better reflection of the company’s array of services and its “dedication to eyecare for patients,” according to an announcement made in late March.

“The new name represents where we are today,” company founder Paul Ernest, MD, said in the statement. In explaining the words chosen for the new name, he added: “Specialty represents the many specialties we have in our practice. The ‘Eye’ is our care for patients and their eyecare needs. The ‘Institute’ represents our interest in research.”

Patients should expect “the same quality care provided by the same medical team here at Specialty Eye Institute,” chief executive officer Trent Roark said in a statement. “The company will continue to operate in its current structure, same physicians and locations.”

Roark also noted that the eyecare company will continue ongoing changes under its new business name and that he expects these changes will “put us in a better position to grow,” according to the statement.

Specialty Eye Institute offers clinical and surgical treatment for eye diseases and conditions in 10 locations throughout Michigan and Ohio. Treatments include diseases of the eye, cataracts, corneal disease, glaucoma, dry eye, macular degeneration, diabetic eyecare, Blepharoplasty and laser vision correction.

A new logo and marketing message—“Improving Sight-Improving Lives”—has been created and it will now be part of Specialty Eye Institute’s corporate identity, according to the announcement. The change also reflects the company’s “significant expansion of [its] business activities since [it] first began operating under the name TLC Eyecare & Laser Centers in 1998.”
