REDWOOD CITY, Calif.— Avegant, a developer of wearable near eye displays based here, announced that they have raised $9.37 million in a Series A funding. The round was led by Intel Capital and NHN Investment with participation from Kaiwu Capital, Crunch Fund, 500 Startups, DN Capital, Calvin Broadus Jr. and the Michigan Angel Fund.

Avegant will use the funds to further develop Glyph, a headset that combines a premium pair of headphones with a Virtual Retinal Display. The display uses micromirrors to reflect an image directly onto the wearer’s retina, effectively using the back of their eyeball as a screen. The resulting picture is extremely sharp and vivid, according to Avegant. Founded in 2012, Avegant raised $1.5 million in a Kickstarter campaign earlier this year and plans to start shipping the device to early adopters in 2015.

Avegant was one of the “Rising Stars in the Wearables World” featured at Vision Monday’s 2014 Global Leadership Summit. Click here to see the presentation about Glyph that Avegant co-founder Edward Tang gave at the VM Summit.
