TOKYO—Strong sales of eyeglass lenses and electronics-related products boosted revenues for Hoya Corp. (TOKYO: 7741) to 127,440 million yen for the fourth quarter ended March 31, 2015, a 10.6 percent increase over the same period last year. The company reported pre-tax profit for the quarter of 25,309 million yen, while profit for this quarter was 18,513 million yen, which marked gains of 27.2 percent and 45.1 percent, respectively.

Hoya’s Life Care unit, which accounts for 63.6 percent of the company’s total revenue, generated sales of 81,057 million yen, a 9.3 percent sales increase over the same period the previous year. Sales of eyeglass lenses and contact lenses, which account for about three-fourths of the total revenue for the Life Care unit, generated 60,227 million yen in revenue, up 10.4 percent over year ago. Sales of intraocular lenses, which account for 25.7 percent of the Life Care unit’s revenue, generated revenue of 20.830, up 6.0 percent over year ago.

Sales increased significantly in the eyeglass lens business through stronger sales in overseas markets and inclusion of Seiko Optical Products, a sales company of Seiko eyewear, as a consolidated subsidiary, according to Hoya. The contact lens retail business posted year-on-year sales decline due to the rebound reduction from the last-minute demand in March the previous year before the consumption tax hike, the company reported. The Life Care unit’s profit before tax for the quarter stood at 13,302 million yen, a decrease of 15.5 percent from the same period the previous year.

Commenting on the fourth quarter results, Hoya CEO Hiroshi Suzuki, said, “Decline in profit for the Life Care segment was mainly due to influence of currency exchange. Sales for eyeglass lens business increased by 20 percent thanks to healthy growth in Europe and U.S. I also expect a new intraocular lens product launched this April to become a hit because of its unique and excellent quality.”

Hoya’s revenues for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2015, totaled 489,961 million yen, up 14.6 percent year on year. Pre-tax profit was 118,249 million yen and profit for the term was 92,941 million yen, an increase of 38.3 percent and 54.5 percent respectively year on year, Hoya reported.

Year-end revenue for Hoya’s Life Care business segment climbed to 306,653 million yen, up 15.5 percent over year-ago. Sales of eyeglass lenses and contact lenses generated 227,322 million yen in revenue, up 16.8 over year-ago.
