Green Technology That's Fast, Too
Reducing our use of natural resources is smart, for both the environment and the bottom line. The latest edger from Briot – the Alta Pro – reduces water consumption to about one-third of the average per lens processed on other edgers.
The Briot Alta Pro is smart technology for more reasons than environmental friendliness. It features a new high speed motor that operates 43 percent faster to increase lab productivity. And it incorporates Briot’s innovative Tilted Bevel System that optimizes the processing of high curvature lenses.
The Alta Pro is the newest addition to Briot's state-of-the-art Alta line of edgers that feature totally automatic beveling, grooving and drilling to handle a wide variety of today's popular eyewear styles with outstanding accuracy. High definition drilling can handle angles up to 30 degrees with a 0.1mm accuracy rate. Angled grooving adjusts automatically to the curvature and thickness of the lens.

Time to Upgrade Your Edger?
When should you upgrade your edging equipment? The answer isn't based simply on the equipment's age. Today’s business-savvy ECPs know that upgrading equipment is cost justified if it improves productivity, enhances patient service and lowers operating costs. To answer the question, you need to evaluate your lab's output against your current job mix and business goals.
Job Mix: Periodically track the types of lenses and frame designs you are edging to identify trends. You may be processing more poly or high-index, or, your rimless jobs may be increasing. Are you sending more high-end jobs to an outside lab, cutting your margins? Would newer technology allow you to process current jobs and projected future job trends more cost effectively? If yes, it’s time to upgrade.
Job Volume: If your job volume is increasing, check the output rate of your edger. With slower equipment, your staff spends more time processing jobs and less time helping patients in your dispensary. New high speed edgers can process most jobs in minutes, improving staff efficiency and speeding up job turnaround, an added benefit for customer satisfaction.
Job Quality: If accuracy and spoilage are concerns and your job output doesn’t meet your quality goals consistently, it’s time to start checking into newer equipment. Retouching and redoing jobs can quickly erode profits. Today's "smart technology" automates virtually every step of the edging process to minimize errors and produce high quality jobs.
A Briot sales consultant can help you evaluate your current finishing equipment, free of charge, to determine if upgrading would provide tangible benefits. Call to make an appointment.

Welcome to the first issue of Briot's Business Edge e-newsletter. It's designed to provide helpful information to make your edging practice more productive and profitable. If you are not currently edging in-house, read on to learn more about the benefits of an on site finishing lab.
2009 was a challenging year for business. Yet in spite of the recession, many optical practices saw an increase in revenue and others remained stable. We're optimistic about 2010, but whatever unfolds, one thing is certain: there has never been a better time to evaluate opportunities to make your practice more resilient and profitable in any economic climate.
One aspect of business resiliency is knowing your target customers and finding ways to meet and exceed their expectations. When it comes to providing prescription eyewear, today's patients want fast, convenient, high quality service. Having an on site lab provides the competitive advantage to meet those demands. Your practice will be in a stronger position to meet the challenges in store for 2010 and well beyond.

Benefits of Leasing
You've selected the new equipment you want for your office. Next comes the financial decision. Should you lease, get a loan or invest cash? There are pros and cons to each choice. Here are some advantages to leasing:
- Leasing minimizes your upfront cash investment, preserving your capital for other business-building opportunities like advertising or remodeling your office and dispensary.
- Leasing leverages your buying-power so you can purchase the best technology to meet your business goals, versus limiting your selection to the available capital on hand.
- Unlike traditional loans, leasing does not affect your bank credit lines for short term lending needs like payroll and inventory.
- You can bundle in related projects costs including equipment, software and maintenance for one monthly payment.
- Depending on the lease type, your payments may qualify for a tax write off as operating expenses.
Consult your tax advisor to decide if leasing new equipment makes the most sense for your practice. Briot can help arrange leasing through our qualified, experienced leasing agent, Univest Capital Inc.

Q. What's the best way to avoid slippage when edging hydrophobic or coated lenses?
A: Finishing hydrophobic lenses is no longer a technical challenge with an edger that includes an automatic setting for processing coated lenses. On Briot edgers, this setting is called the "Slippery Mode" and it automatically adjusts machine speed and chuck pressure to avoid slippage.
When edging any kind of coated lenses, make sure you select good quality leap pads. Clean the blocking surfaces to ensure a good bond, and use blocks that are in good condition; worn out blocks will lead to problems.
