EYECARE: A Greater Vision IAPB Announces Winners of International 2022 World Sight Day Photo Competition By Staff Wednesday, November 2, 2022 12:21 AM LONDON—The International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) has announced the winners of the World Sight Day 2022 Photo Competition. An independent panel of seven judges from around the world selected this year’s winners. The judges have chosen "Eye Screening at Jukwa, Ghana" by Kwame Yeboah as this year’s winning professional Photo of the Year and "Refraction" by Laite Tuiloma as the winning amateur Photo of the Year. Winners were selected from 960 images submitted from over 60 countries. Simon Darvill, head of communications and campaigns, IAPB said, “The success of this years’ photo competition reflects the significant leap in engagement we have seen for World Sight Day. It is staggering the way people have encompassed and celebrated World Sight Day like never before. The photo competition, that is always a highlight, has benefited from that exposure and the quality of submissions are second to none. I don’t envy the judges having to choose our winners from such a great selection. “Since its inception in 2015, the World Sight Day Photo Competition, supported by Bayer, has helped tell the story of eyecare; the social and economic impact of having accessible, available and affordable eyecare and the flip side. We are thrilled that so many photographers are keen to be part of helping tell that story. We sincerely thank everyone who participated and congratulations to our winners,” added Darvill. I'd put this image on the cover of a magazine because it truly represents that we should strive to provide these services to all.” Judge Julie-Anne Davies, professional photographer and World Sight Day 2021 Photo Competition Winner, said of this year's finalists, “Each image had substance either creatively or through the story they told, evoking emotion in the viewer and capturing our attention.” The judging panel consisted of: Caroline Casey, founder and creator, The Valuable 500 & IAPB president; David Katz, internationally acclaimed photojournalist and founder of the David Katz Foundation; Dean Saffron, world-renowned photojournalist; Dr Princess Ifeoma Ike, IAPB Eye Health Hero; Imraan Gallo, visually impaired photographer and advocate for Artists with Disabilities; Julie-Anne Davies, professional photographer and World Sight Day 2021 Photo Competition Winner; and Marge Axelrad, senior vice president and editorial director, Vision Monday and VMAIL.
