ST. LOUIS—The American Optometric Association (AOA) has released the evidence-based clinical practice guideline, “Comprehensive Adult Eye and Vision Examination,” for a 30-day online peer and public review. The guideline describes appropriate examination procedures to evaluate the eye health and vision status of adult patients to ensure clear and comfortable vision.

“Putting this guideline out for public review provides an opportunity for an even broader perspective of input that’s critically important to this process,” said Diane Adamczyk, OD, chair of the AOA Evidence-Based Optometry Committee, which is responsible for compiling the evidence-based clinical practice guidelines.

The peer and public review period also helps the AOA guideline meet standards set forth in the Institute of Medicine’s “Clinical Practice Guidelines We Can Trust,” which requires external review from relevant stakeholders, such as scientific and clinical experts, agencies, industry and the public.

To participate in the review, access the online Peer & Public Review Comment Form and guideline information here, log comments and suggestions within the document, and forward it to QualityImprovement@AOA.org.

The peer and public review period officially began last week on Friday, Feb. 6, 2015, and comments will be accepted through March 10, 2015. The finished guideline will be available later in 2015.
