Gedde, MD, professor of ophthalmology at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute of the University of Miami, part of UHealth—the University of Miami Health System, was awarded the 2016 Straatsma Award for Excellence in Resident Education. The award recognizes and celebrates an outstanding residency program director in ophthalmology. “I believe there is tremendous potential to positively impact patient care through education,” said Dr. Gedde at the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s annual meeting in Chicago. “Graduating residents and fellows elevate the quality of patient care that is delivered in their local communities. As they in turn educate others, they participate in the incremental dissemination of knowledge. I attribute the success of residency programs to outstanding chairmen and faculty who are deeply committed to teaching the next generation of ophthalmologists.”Some of his accomplishments include publishing more than 300 peer-reviewed articles, abstracts and book chapters on topics in glaucoma and medical education; editing the second edition of Curbside Consultation in Glaucoma: 48 Clinical Questions; holding the John G. Clarkson Chair in Ophthalmology which supports medical education at Bascom Palmer; and currently serving as the Institute’s vice chairman of education.During his 17 years as director for Bascom Palmer’s residency program, the residency has consistently ranked as the nation’s top ophthalmology training program in peer surveys by Ophthalmology Times and Doximity. During Gedde’s tenure, graduating residents have achieved a pass rate of 100 percent in the examinations given by the American Board of Ophthalmology.
