LAKE SUCCESS, NY—DigitalOptometrics plans to expand the use of its remote eye exam system in 2019, bringing it to optometrists nationwide. The year-old company, based here, said it has successfully examined thousands of patients in the Northeast via their tele-optometry system. DigitalOptometrics’ system allows licensed optometrists to perform comprehensive eye exams from remote locations, communicating with their patients via teleconference technology. The exams, which include a subjective refraction, take less than 30 minutes and allow the optometrist to issue corrective lens prescriptions.

Optometrists can examine patients located at multiple office locations, either from their home or business office location. A host provider can use their staff optometrists, DigitalOptometrics optometrists or a combination of both. An optometrist can turn off the remote function of the optical system to perform an on-site exam of the patient.

DigitalOptometrics founder, Howard Fried, OD, spoke about ocular telehealth at the 2018 Vision Monday Global Leadership Summit.
