NEW YORK & NEWARK, Calif.—EyeQue, a Silicon Valley start-up that develops affordable consumer vision technologies, has been named a CES 2017 Best of Innovation Awards Honoree for its EyeQue Personal Vision Tracker.

“We are delighted to receive the honor of Best of Innovation for the Personal Vision Tracker, adding to the overwhelmingly positive response we’ve received from consumers and the optometrist community since introducing the product last month,” said John Serri, PhD, co-founder of EyeQue.

“Earning this coveted award for the Personal Vision Tracker serves as an acknowledgement of the absence of affordable, accessible vision testing solutions for the consumer market,” said Tibor Laczay, co-founder of EyeQue.

Laczay is also CEO of online retailer Zenni Optical. Zenni Optical is not connected with EyeQue, according to Serri.

The EyeQue Personal Vision Tracker is an in-home vision testing system that combines a cloud-based technology platform with a smartphone application and a miniature optical scope to enable consumers to perform their own refractions. Although the system does not produce an eyeglass prescription, it generates what EyeQue calls “Eyeglass Numbers.”

“The EyeGlass Numbers are the same spherical, cylindrical and axis numbers that are used in prescriptions,” an EyeQue spokesperson told VMail. “With the emergence of so many online eyeglass retailers, many of which do not require a prescription, consumers now have the opportunity to use those EyeGlass Numbers to order new eyeglasses at their convenience.

“We absolutely advocate and take every opportunity to remind people that the Personal Vision Tracker is not intended to replace or substitute their regular full eye health exam provided by a doctor,” the spokesperson said. “We expect people will find it valuable to test their eyes more frequently and track their vision changes over time, between their annual or bi-annual exams, as well as for optometrists to provide this tool to allow patients to take more frequent measurements and keep them apprised of any vision changes.”

The CES Innovation Awards are sponsored by the Consumer Technology Association (CTA), the producer of CES 2017, the mega-exhibition of consumer technology held each January in Las Vegas.
