LAS VEGAS—Eyewear probably isn't the first thing that comes to mind when most people think of CES 2017. But this annual tech mecca, formerly known as the Consumer Electronics Show, serves as a launchpad for a cornucopia of electronic eyewear and related products.

Only a few years ago, most of the electronic eyewear exhibited here was limited to 3D glasses for viewing movies and TV shows. But the field has grown and diversified considerably. This year, dozens of companies are showcasing virtual reality, including big names such as Oculus and optical companies such as Carl Zeiss. Smart glasses with augmented reality capabilities are much in evidence, with industry leaders such as Vuzix and ODG showcasing an array of new products, many designed for specialized uses in the workplace.

Frames and sunwear equipped with high definition video cameras are also on display from companies such as PogoTec, a tech startup that just announced a partnership with four frame suppliers.

Safilo Group, together with Interaxon, is introducing SafiloX, that it calls "a brain-sensing eyewear platform" that "helps consumers find their 'flow' through beautiful designer frames."

Several companies are also featuring products designed for eyeglass wearers or those who may require vision correction. For example, RightEye is showcasing an eye tracking system that optometrists can use to diagnose children with reading problems. Another startup, EyeQue, is rolling out a device that enables a smartphone to perform a refractive test. Two companies, Eyejust and Reticare, are showcasing blue light filters for digital devices. And Fuel3D is debuting a facial scanning system that optical retailers can use in conjunction with 3D printing to produce personalized eyeglass frames.

This snapshot shows the diverse range of optical products on display at CES 2017, and is an indicator of the vitality of this growing and increasingly influential sector of the optical world.
