Latest News FDA and Trade Associations to Sponsor Myopia Progression Workshop on Sept. 30 By Staff Monday, August 15, 2016 12:24 AM NEW YORK—A milestone U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) workshop on myopia progression will bring together internationally renowned scientists and clinicians this fall, and AOA members will have the opportunity to participate. This event is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 30, 2016 from 8 am to 6 pm at the FDA White Oak Campus in Silver Spring, MD.Titled “Controlling the Progression of Myopia: Contact Lenses and Future Medical Devices,” the workshop will discuss the condition that affects nearly 30 percent of Americans with an aim toward developing a clinical trial to analyze the efficacy of devices slowing its development.The FDA noted this workshop will greatly inform the premarket evaluation of contact lenses and other devices designed to control myopia progression. Topics of discussion include:• Myopia abroad, demographics and history• Pediatric contact lens use, behaviors and hygiene• Complications of contact lens use• Devices used to control myopia and U.S. regulation of such devices• Challenges to clinical trials, and barriers to participation and retention.The one-day workshop will be co-sponsored by The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Center for Devices and Radiological Health, the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), the American Academy of Optometry (AAO), the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (AAPOS), the American Association of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS), the American Optometric Association (AOA), and the Contact Lens Association of Ophthalmologists (CLAO).
