ATLANTA— iChek, a developer of contact lens technology for glucose and hydration monitoring, announced the formation of its new Medical Advisory Board (MAB) with two key appointments: David Klonoff, MD, FACP, FRCPE, and AIMBE fellow Joe Rappon, OD, MS, FAAO. Both are accomplished and well credentialed industry thought leaders. Dr. Klonoff, founder and editor-and chief of Journal of Diabetes Science and Technology, is serving as chairman of the Diabetes Technology meeting being held in Bethesda, Maryland this week. Dr. Rappon recently received the AAO Julius F. Neumueller Award in Optics.

“We are pleased to have these industry experts join our new and expanding group of supporters as we progress research and development of our pioneering technology “said James Shu, iChek CEO. “Experienced insight and guidance will drive our technology and its output to commercialization.”

According to an issued statement from iChek, the company’s active contact lens allows for real time glucose and electrolyte monitoring with low warm-up time by simply shining a light onto the contact lens while on the eye. The light source will come from a small attachment to an iOS or android device that can collect, store (in the cloud), analyze, send and present the objectively measured data to the user, caregiver or physician. The technology was developed at the University of Maryland by a group of pre-eminent researchers.

The company has raised initial seed capital and is establishing further research and development as well as actively establishing clinical roadmaps for their active contact lens technology in the U.S.
