NEW YORK—This year, Women In Optometry will hold its first Theia Awards of Excellence to honor women ODs in the following three categories—Leadership, Mentoring and Innovation. But time is running out because nominations are closing Sunday, Oct. 2. The Theia Awards of Excellence are named for Theia, the Greek goddess of vision or sight.

Now in its 11th year of publication, Women In Optometry magazine and the womeninoptometry.com website have featured the stories of hundreds of women ODs in its pages. "Many of these women are remarkable in their leadership and contributions that they have made to the profession," said April Jasper, OD, FAAO, professional co-editor of the publication.

"We felt that the timing was right to acknowledge some of these women on a national level with the creation of the Theia Awards," added Katie Gilbert-Spear, OD, MPH, also professional co-editor. The individual awards—in leadership, mentoring and innovation—are named after women trailblazers in optometric history.

If you know a woman OD who falls under any of the three categories listed above please take some time to nominate her today. Nominations are being accepted through Oct. 2, and the WO advisory board of 15 ODs will determine the winners. Awards will be presented at a Women In Optometry networking event to be held at the American Academy of Optometry meeting in Anaheim.
