Latest News Prevent Blindness Names Honoree for Jenny Pomeroy Award for Excellence in Vision and Public Health By Staff Monday, June 6, 2016 12:27 AM Bruce Moore, OD. CHICAGO—Prevent Blindness has announced the recipient of the 2016 Jenny Pomeroy Award for Excellence in Vision and Public Health. Bruce Moore, OD, Marcus Professor of Pediatric Studies, New England College of Optometry will be honored during the 5th annual Prevent Blindness Focus on Eye Health National Summit in Washington, D.C. on July 13, 2016. The award, named for Mrs. Jenny Pomeroy, who served as CEO of Prevent Blindness Georgia from 1996 until 2013 is presented annually to an individual, team or organization that has made significant contributions to the advancement of public health related to vision and eye health.Moore who is a primary investigator in the “Vision in Preschoolers Study” and the “Vision in Preschoolers-Hyperopia in Preschoolers Study” was also involved in the “Pediatric Eye Disease Investigator Group, Correction of Myopia Evaluation Trial.” Since 2010, he has been a principal volunteer for the Children’s Vision Massachusetts Coalition, representing it at national and statewide conferences and participating in countless local meetings with the purpose of advancing vision-related public health practices in Massachusetts. Moore was also a member of the National Center for Children’s Vision and Eye Health at Prevent Blindness expert panel and now serves on the center’s advisory committee. He is scheduled to present on his work as the closing plenary speaker for the July summit. “I am deeply honored and want to thank Prevent Blindness for this recognition,” said Moore. “This is a wonderful exclamation point for my career and provides me with an incentive to keep pushing for all of the things we have been working for, to ensure that all of the children of our nation get the care that they need and deserve.” Additionally, B. Thomas Hutchinson, MD, was named as honorable mention for the Jenny Pomeroy Award for Excellence in Vision and Public Health for his work as a founder of EyeCare America, the public service program of the Foundation of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, providing eyecare at no out-of-pocket cost to those who qualify. “Prevent Blindness congratulates Dr. Moore and Dr. Hutchinson for embodying the spirit of the award by their tireless efforts in championing the important cause of healthy vision and eyecare for all individuals,” said Hugh R.
