Latest News Prop 65 Product Warnings for BpA Take Effect Today in California By Staff Wednesday, May 11, 2016 12:18 AM ALEXANDRIA, Va.—Starting today, optical companies in California must label products that contain the chemical BpA (Bisphenol A) and place signs in workplaces notifying workers if materials they may come into contact with contain the chemical. The state of California is enacting the regulation, which impacts manufacturers, labs and retailers, exactly one year after relisting BpA on its Proposition 65 list of substances known to the state to cause birth defects or reproductive toxicity. The regulation includes products that are already "on the shelf," or in inventory, and includes areas where polycarbonate is processed and dispensed, and where employees or customers might be exposed to it, according to The Vision Council, which has provided information on its website to assist members in complying with the new regulation. Some optical industry observers had hoped eyeglasses would be excluded from the regulation under a “safe harbor” clause, but California has not published a final safe harbor level for BpA, The Vision Council said.
