MINNEAPOLIS— Security Life Insurance Company of America, a provider of ancillary benefits, has added stand-alone vision insurance to its plan offerings. PrimeStar Individual Vision Insurance includes two plan options, the PrimeStar Choice Vision Plan and the PrimeStar Select Vision plan.

The PrimeStar Choice Vision Plan will utilize the VSP Vision Care network of 31,000 providers in private practice. The PrimeStar Choice Vision plan is open to VSP network providers who participate in the Choice network, a VSP spokesperson told VMail.

The PrimeStar Select Vision plan will use the EyeMed Access network, which consists of more than 78,000 providers, both independent (66 percent) and retail (34 percent), an EyeMed spokesperson told VMail.

Combined, the two plans and networks cover a wide variety of consumer needs—from the big box retail optical stores to the small private shops, according to a March 2, 2015, announcement from Security Life. PrimeStar Vision is available in 36 states, with more state approvals expected in the coming week, the announcement said. Plan benefits include immediate coverage of eye exams, lenses and frames, discounted LASIK procedure and additional savings for choosing an in-network provider.

The plans became available for purchase on Feb. 28, 2015, and were effective March 1, 2015, a spokesperson for Security Life Insurance Company of America told VMail.  “We plan to roll out additional states as the product gets approved with each state’s department of insurance. Hopefully all states will be implemented in the next three months,” the spokesperson told VMail.

“Vision insurance is one of the most used consumer benefits,” said Mark Zesbaugh, CEO of Security Life. “We have seen a strong market demand for stand-alone individual vision insurance, so we are proud to respond to that need with the launch of PrimeStar Vision. With competitive benefits and partnerships with two of the most well-known vision networks, VSP and EyeMed, we expect a very positive response from our customers.”
