PAUL, Minn.—The Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO) named ophthalmologist Eydie Miller-Ellis president of the organization on Aug. 1, 2015. "I am honored to serve as JCAHPO's president for the next two years, and look forward to leading the organization into a future that draws on, substantiates and continues JCAHPO's history as a visionary in the field of allied ophthalmic health certification and education," Miller-Ellis said. "I am privileged to serve as the chief volunteer and strive to advance the standards set by my prestigious predecessors."Miller-Ellis currently serves as a professor of clinical ophthalmology and director of glaucoma service at Scheie Eye Institute at the University of Pennsylvania. She specializes in the diagnosis and medical/surgical management of complex glaucoma. Additionally, she is an active member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Glaucoma Society, National Medical Association and Women in Ophthalmology. "I am pleased to 'hand the gavel' to Dr. Miller-Ellis,” said Karl Golnik, JCAHPO immediate past president. “She has a great commitment to the education and the value of certification of our ophthalmic medical personnel, as well as a deep understanding of JCAHPO's mission and programs, having served as JCAHPO’s treasurer and on the certification committee.”Throughout her career, Miller-Ellis has excelled in the area of resident education namely surgical training and has been active in the teaching of allied ophthalmic personnel. She has been recognized by Best Doctors in America and received numerous teaching and achievement awards in this area. Miller-Ellis was elected to the 2014 class of the Academy of Master Clinicians at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Miller-Ellis completed her medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh, her ophthalmology residency at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and her glaucoma fellowship at Yale University. Additionally, she has maintained a clinical practice in glaucoma diagnosis and management. She will be installed at the JCAHPO annual meeting in Las Vegas on Nov. 13, 2015.
