Latest News Vision Council Announces ANSI Z80.1 Revision By Staff Wednesday, November 18, 2015 12:15 AM ALEXANDRIA, Va.—The Vision Council, as the Secretariat Administrator for Accredited Standards Committee Z80, announced that the Committee has revised the ANSI Z80.1 Standard, Prescription Ophthalmic Lenses— Recommendations, the first changes to the standard in five years.Published by ANSI (American National Standards Institute), ANSI Z80.1 serves as a recommendation for optical laboratories and opticians/dispensers prior to delivering eyewear to the customer, and applies to all prescription spectacle lenses in the uncut, edged and completed/assembled form. The 2015 revision of Standard Z80.1 supersedes the 2010 Standard and represents five years of work by a team of 22 industry experts, led by chairman Dick Whitney of Carl Zeiss Vision, vice chair Rick Tinson of Hoya Vision Care, and Secretary Karl Citek, OD, PhD, representing the American Optometric Association.The Vision Council said the revision includes modifications and additions that have been made to assure that this standard stays current with the latest industry and technology advancements. This publication includes modifications to several portions of the standard, including: • Updates to the Scope and Purpose sections to better reflect how the committee believes the standard should be used in today’s environment.• Changes and modifications to the definitions section, including the addition of “position of wear” definitions.• Additions to the optical requirements section, including further clarification of how tolerances should be applied to compensated lenses.• Modifications to marking guidelines.• The addition of a recommendation for minimum transmittance when driving, providing guidance and harmonizing with ANSI Z80.3 requirements in this area.• The addition of a reference to orientation of polarization.A copy of the standard publications is available in the ANSI webstore.
