AUBREY, Texas—To help eyecare professionals share patient information while adhering to new health care regulations, Quuxx launched earlier this year with plans to introduce a full suite of cloud-based integrated solutions known as the vRxID Solution Suite. The new company will begin with the launch of its Vision Provider Network ECP locator at Vision Expo West taking place in Las Vegas this week.

The new company’s vision is to enable ophthalmologists, optometrists and opticians to remove information that identifies patients from their prescriptions so that they can then be shared with others while still adhering to HIPAA and other health care regulations. The identifying information becomes encrypted and converted into a unique tracking number known as a vRxID that can then be shared anonymously between the ECP and the lab, manufacturer or other partners without violating HIPAA and other laws.

“As the vision industry continues to adapt to HIPAA, HITECH, and Omnibus regulations, migration to vRxID will be critical to encourage an open, industry-wide competitive marketplace,” according to a statement from Quuxx, explaining the need for the vRxID Solution Suite. “As the regulatory pressure continues to mount on the vision industry, the vRxID is a strategic mechanism to provide a ‘plug-and-play,’ competitive industry.”

The company’s CEO, Mark Vander Meiden, developed and expanded the solution as a result of work done in orthopedic durable medical equipment. He also served in information technology for Essilor for seven years. Tom Cadle, the company’s COO, worked as the chief I.T. security officer for Essilor for 17 years. Mike Stinnett, the company’s CFO, was also in the I.T. department with Essilor for 17 years, working in data center operations and I.T. financial planning. Quuxx’s vice president of business development, Regina Krug, has some experience in the vision industry, but much of her career has been in technology and business operations in the financial sector.

Beginning at Vision Expo West, opticians, optometrists and ophthalmologists can register for a free listing on the Vision Provider Network, a database of eyecare providers where they can identify their specialties, the types of insurances they accept and other details specific to their practice.

The Vision Provider Network will be followed shortly after but in concert with the introduction of Quuxx’s Vision Prescription (vRx) Consumer Mobile App, an application that enables individuals to store their vision prescription for future purchases, allows patients to access their managed care benefits and provides a conduit through which ECPs can offer users special offers tailored to their specific needs.

The mobile application seamlessly links ECPs who are registered on the Vision Provider Network with consumers who have downloaded the Vision Prescription (vRx) mobile application. The linkage creates a unique tracking number, the vRxID, which enables the ECP to directly communicate and disseminate information to their patients. The app will also automatically notify prescribing doctors when patients fill their eyeglasses prescriptions even when they are not filled by the prescribing doctors themselves. This will enable ophthalmologists, optometrists and opticians to have access to information that was previously unavailable to them, according to Quuxx.
