Latest News VSP Vision Care Survey Takes Pulse of Americans on the Open Enrollment Process By Staff Monday, October 10, 2016 12:21 AM RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif.—Americans believe they are becoming more knowledgeable about the vision benefits offered by their employers, according to a new survey. In a VSP Vision Care survey of Americans, 66 percent of respondents reported feeling “more knowledgeable” about vision benefits, compared with 55 percent of respondents who felt this way in 2015. This finding, coupled with other survey responses, seems to “reflect the growing sense of importance of vision care benefits,” VSP noted in a statement reporting the overall survey results. “In fact, the number of respondents who ranked having a vision plan as ‘important’ or ‘very important’ was up by 10 percentage points this year (83 percent compared to 73 percent in 2015).”The two surveys were timed to coincide with the beginning of the “open enrollment” period for employer-offered benefits. This is the second consecutive year that VSP Vision Care has conducted this national poll to gauge how people feel about the yearly benefits selection process. The overall findings of the 2016 survey, which covered 1,000 respondents, indicate that “indifference is down and knowledge is up,” according to VSP.VSP found that those who report “no particular feelings at all” toward completing open enrollment decreased this year to 45 percent, compared with 52 percent who felt this way in 2015. The other respondents to this question fell into one of groups: the larger of which was “dread” or “annoyance” (36 percent in 2016 compared with 33 percent in 2015) of the open-enrollment period, and a second group made up of those who look forward to open enrollment with “eagerness” or “excitement,” which increased to 19 percent this year from 16 percent in 2015.That's good news, noted VSP, a provider of vision care and coverage to more than 82 million plan members worldwide. “Annual eye exams are part of overall health, helping to detect signs of diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and more,” the statement noted. “At the same time, vision care is typically one of the easiest and quickest options to review and select. VSP created the survey ‘Open Talk about Open Enrollment’ to make sure ‘easy’ doesn't become ‘easy to dismiss,’ and to encourage people to check the box when it comes to vision care.”The survey also probed Americans on their feelings about open enrollment compared with other experiences that are part of life, such as waiting in an airport security line, celebrating a birthday and/or watching another presidential debate. Along this line, the respondents were asked whether they would prefer completing the open-enrollment process or reading another article about the Kardashian family. Americans overwhelmingly (87 percent respondents) chose completing open enrollment over reading another Kardashian article.Read more survey findings here.
