ROSELLE, Ill.—Modern Optical International co-founder and chairman, Yale F. Weissman passed away on Sept. 18, 2016 at the age of 77.

Born in Chicago in 1939, Weissman honed his skills in sales during his early years in various professions and was introduced to the optical industry in the early 1970s. In 1974, Weissman co-founded Modern Optical with then partner Donald Ellefsen.

They built the company’s foundation in the value-oriented eyewear sector with Weissman leading the sales team. In 1991 Weissman’s son Kenneth joined the company, later becoming the president while Weissman transitioned to the role of chairman.

The father-son team furthered Modern Optical’s presence, expanding the sales force coast to coast and internationally. Throughout the company’s 42-year history, Modern Optical has remained true to its founding principles of providing quality, affordable eyewear while delivering excellent customer service, according to the company.

“Our Modern family is forever grateful for my father’s strong leadership, vision, and passion to create a company with purpose and integrity,” Ken Weissman, president of Modern Optical International said. “Thank you to everyone for your compassion and support as we honor this remarkable man and his legacy we call Modern Optical. We will miss him dearly.”

The family has requested that memorial contributions be made to the Alzheimer’s Association at alz.org.
