According to Prevent Blindness, cataract is a clouding of the eye’s lens which blocks or changes the passage of light into the eye. Cataracts can develop slowly or quickly, or progress to a certain point, then not get any worse. Besides aging, other factors such as eye infections, some medicines (steroids), injuries or exposure to intense heat or radiation, may cause cataracts.

Every year in the U.S., the organization stated, more than two million cataract surgeries are performed and no complications are found in over 95 percent of the cases. To mark Cataract Awareness Month, here is an infographic by Scottsdale Eye with some statistics on cataract surgery.
