NEW YORK—According to the 2016 Digital Eye Strain Report, “Defend Your Vision: The Digital Device Dilemma” published by The Vision Council, 65 percent of Americans experience symptoms of digital eye strain.

On Feb. 25, Dr. Jessie Lee, medical advisor for The Vision Council took a “Lunch Break with Tanya Rivero” on Wall Street Journal Live to discuss the growing impact of digital devise use on adults as well as children’s developing eyes.

During the interview, Lee identified key findings presented in the recent report along with the causes and effects of digital eye strain. She mentions using digital devices for a prolonged amount of time can cause an immediate decrease in work productivity and over time an increase in nearsightedness, in addition to headaches among children between the ages of 4 and 5 years old.

Other indications are blurred vision, double vision, dry irritated eyes along with neck and back pain. Lee concluded the interview with a few recommendations comprising a computer eyewear solution and an easy 20-20-20 rule to relieve the symptoms and halt the long-term effects of digital eye strain.
