Dave Brown Joins IDOC as President, Dr. Mark Feder Continues as CEO

NORWALK, Conn.—Dave Brown, formerly president of Vistakon - North America, has joined Independent Doctors of Optometric Care (IDOC), as president, a move which became effective Feb. 17. Mark Feder, OD, founder, of IDOC alliance, will continue in an active role as CEO of the group. Brown will be based at IDOC’s corporate office here and will report to Feder.

In his new role, Brown will be responsible for running the day-to-day operations of the business, overseeing sales, marketing and member services. Feder told VM, “As a result of Dave’s joining us, I’ll be able to focus full time on developing the long-term strategy and critical path objectives so IDOC achieves its goal of continued strong membership growth, ensuring our members are represented on state and nationwide insurance plans and providing the best business education on the emerging trends important to the success of independent optometrists. I will also be able to focus on solidifying key industry relationships that will further position IDOC as a leader in the optometric space.”

Brown’s career spans the consumer OTC, pharmaceutical and medical device sectors. Recruited by Johnson & Johnson (NYSE: JNJ) in 1990, Brown is a is a proven professional and consumer marketer, with experience in creating programs, company turnaround, and entrepreneurial start-ups. Brown joined Vistakon division of Johnson & Johnson Vision Care as vice president of the worldwide franchise in 2006. In this role, he led the global launch of the world’s first daily disposable silicone hydrogel lens, 1-DAY ACUVUE TruEye Brand Contact Lenses. In 2009, Brown was appointed president of Vistakon - North America Region.

Luxottica Names Privitera to Head Glasses.com Business


MILAN—Carlo Privitera has been named by Luxotttica (NYSE: LUX) to head its Glasses.com business. The company acquired the assets of Glasses.com from WellPoint, Inc., earlier this year, when WellPoint spun off its 1-800 CONTACTS operation to Thomas H. Lee.

Most recently chief operating officer over Luxottica’s North American Retail Business Services, Privitera is leaving Luxottica Retail to fully transfer to his new role now that Luxottica has completed the Glasses.com transaction. Privitera will report directly to Luxottica’s CEO, Andrea Guerra, in his new role. The current management team of Glasses.com, including John Graham, general manager, will stay with the business, a Luxottica spokesperson told VM, noting, however, that it was previously announced that the 1-800/Glasses.com founder, Jonathan Coon, is retiring from the company with the sale of the business.

Glasses.com will maintain its market positioning and will stay as a freestanding online eyewear site and digital platform, independent from Luxottica’s other e-commerce and online initiatives, the spokesperson also told VM. Privitera will be based in New York.

Privitera joined Luxottica in 2005, starting as the head of industrial supply chain, subsequently being named CIO. For the last three years, he has led the North America Retail Business Services, comprised of asset protection, central planning, corporate communications and internal media, human resources, logistics, real estate and strategic environments.

 
Carla Mack  
Mack Joins Alcon’s U.S. Vision Care Team


FORT WORTH, Texas—Alcon has appointed Carla Mack, OD, MBA, FAAO as director of professional and clinical support, for U.S. Vision Care. In this role, Dr. Mack will provide the organization with clinical and technical expertise, as well as set the group’s professional communications strategy, always keeping the needs of the professional and the patient at the core of everything Alcon does.

“Our purpose at Alcon is to transform eyecare,” said Jim Murphy, VP and GM of U.S. Vision Care. “We need to bring key opinion leaders like Carla Mack into our organization to help us understand the professional and patient experience from every perspective.”

Dr. Mack’s career runs the full gamut of the eye care profession—from clinical practice, to academia, to research, to commercial—in her nearly 20 years of experience. This unique background gives her the ability to help link the professional, technical and commercial strategies for Alcon, according to the company.

Prior to joining Alcon, Dr. Mack was the global director of Medical Affairs and the Global Director of Professional Marketing at Bausch + Lomb. She’s been on faculty at The Ohio State University College of Optometry where she ran the eyecare practice as the director of clinics.

 
Lauren Landrum  
Prima Eye Group Names Landrum New Marketing Specialist


ATLANTA—Prima Eye Group has hired Lauren Landrum as a marketing specialist. She will manage free marketing services that this alliance of eyecare professionals recently began offering for its members. Prior to joining Prima, Landrum worked at CNN and served as a producer for HLN. Her areas of expertise include brand development, writing and production, social media management and video editing.

In her new position, Landrum will work under the supervision of Neil Gailmard, OD, MBA, FAAO, co-founder and president of Prima Eye Group, to provide practice marketing support to members. She will help doctors and office managers design a marketing plan using social media, telephone recall, in-office events, community outreach, signage, logo design and other strategies. Prima will also help members develop a marketing budget and calendar to stay organized. ■
