SCENE + HEARD Massachusetts Opticians Bring Eyewear to the Cinema By Staff Monday, July 18, 2016 12:00 AM FOXBORO, Mass.—The Opticians Association of Massachusetts (OAM) came up with a new venue and concept for its latest ABO CE seminar, holding its first ever Cinema Meeting here at a movie theater. Three dynamic speakers, Todd Berberian of Todd Rogers Eyewear, David Friedfeld of ClearVision Optical and Scott Shapiro of Europa International, discussed the future of eyewear designed and made in America. Berberian, an independent optician, explained his company tagline “Designed by an Optician, Made to be Worn” and how becoming a dad helped him develop Jackson Rogers, a line of quality kids’ eyewear. ClearVision’s Friedfeld noted his late father, Fred, was an optician and talked about 3D printing, an additive process using less material to produce frames in a shorter time. Prototypes are evaluated quickly, which ClearVision did when it asked for opticians’ feedback on its Dilli Dalli kids’ line. Europa’s Scott Shapiro discussed STATE Optical, a new line of luxury eyewear, created to instill the pride of “Made in America” that was once common in the industry. He invited opticians to visit STATE’s Chicago plant to see the process firsthand. OAM holds CE meetings for about 300 attendees and 35 corporate partners. At the cinema, OAM corporate partner, Hilco, donated raffle prizes.
