FISHKILL, NY—OnesSight, in partnership with the Fresh Air Fund and 141 Eyewear, held its ninth annual clinic here last month to provide vision care and eyewear to children in need. The clinic launched on July 5 and continued until July 17. Held under the direction of OneSight Program Manager Leona Dockery, who herself had been a Fresh Air Fund camper as a child, the clinic attracted more than 1,000 children and over 100 volunteers. 141 Eyewear, based in Portland, Ore. provided eyeglasses for the event.

Participants in the clinic included five ODs, two of which were affiliated with 141, 137 volunteers comprised of Luxottica employees and partners/family members, and East Coast sales agent for 141 Eyewear, Castel Valere-Couturier. Valere-Couturier was on the scene for one day for his first clinic in the New York area.

“As a native New Yorker, it was incredibly rewarding for me to be able to participate in Fishkill Clinic, especially since many of the kids at the clinic were from Harlem, where I grew up,” Valere-Couturier said.

In attendance with Valere-Couturier was Irine Shiyan, OD from Village Eyecare, one of 141’s retailers located in the East Village of New York City. In a single day, Dr. Shiyan performed eye exams on about 80 children who needed glasses, many of whom had never had any, and some who had lost or broken their previous pair.

“The kids were a joy to work with,” Shiyan said. “They were happy to be getting their eyes checked, many for the first time, and were very appreciative of the help they were receiving. It felt good to help so many kids.”

In total, OneSight’s Fishkill Clinic provided 1,331 vision screenings, 944 eye exams, and 919 pairs of eyeglasses for the children present.
