NEW YORK—Awards show season is wrapping up, with the final big red carpet being rolled out at the Dolby Theatre tomorrow for the Oscars. While we will all be on the lookout for those one-of-a-kind Dior, Zac Posen and Versace couture gowns, it’s worthwhile to also be on the lookout for some looks that feature eyewear. As I stated in my editor’s column in our February issue, it seems as though when it comes to talking accessories, eyewear gets the short-end of the stick. After any given awards show, stylists and celebrities alike will tag their earrings, bags, shoes, necklaces and watches, but trying to find an ID for a pair of glasses is almost herculean.

Since eyewear has been a part of iconic awards show moments for as long as celebs have been answering, “What Are You Wearing?” here’s a look at some trends that were worn back in the day and have come back around.

Cat Eye

When it comes to trendsetting, Beyoncé is queen, but because fashion’s always cycling, she can’t be first at every trend. At this year’s Grammy’s while Queen Bey decided to opt out of walking the red carpet, she still gave us a fashion moment as she sat with her family in an all-black ensemble, wide-brim hat, and completed her incognito look with a pair of exaggerated cat eye frames. Back in 1999, Celine Dion went the polar opposite route, when she decided to adorn her starkly white ensemble, with a pair of soft cat eye frames on the Oscar’s red carpet.

Tinted Lenses

Nothing screams late 90s to early 2000s quite like a pair of tinted lenses. This oldie, but goodie has once again become all the rage, with the likes of Selena Gomez and Gigi Hadid propelling it in their everyday looks. However, Meg Ryan spotted the trend while walking the 1998 Oscar’s red carpet and almost 20 years later, Stranger Things darling, Millie Bobby Brown also rocked the trend while attending the 2017 Teen Choice Awards.

Optical Frames

Optical frames have also had their moment in the light at awards shows. In 2008, when Whoopi Goldberg hosted the 62nd Annual Tony Awards, she incorporated a pair of rimless optical frames for one of her looks. In 2017 when Meryl Streep won the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the 74th Golden Globe Awards, she also wore a pair of square optical frames. Oprah Winfrey then repeated the trend at this year’s Golden Globes with her cat eye glasses.

The Aviator

Aviators seem to be a men’s favorite at award shows. For example, when the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, won a whopping, eight awards at the 1984 Grammys, he topped off his embellished look with a pair of oversized aviators. Jump to this year’s Grammy’s, as Bruno Mars accepted his award for “Song of the Year,” the singer also topped off his semi-casual look with a pair of aviators. The aviator is also a go-to frame for red carpet favorite, Sterling K. Brown who recently wore a pair at the Screen Actors Guild Awards (SAGS).
