Oakley’s New Process Expands Rx Range for Its High Wraps

Oakley said its new True Digital Edge technology virtually eliminates the peripheral distortion that can result when prescriptions are applied to high-wrap lenses.
FOOTHILL RANCH, Calif.—Oakley is introducing Oakley True Digital Edge, a proprietary technology that will allow many people with more advanced prescriptions to wear the company’s high-wrap sunglasses.

“Now patients who want the unrivaled style and improved side protection of high-wrap lenses won’t be impeded by prescriptions that would normally require them to settle for flatter sunglasses, or high-wrap lenses with poor optics and inferior cosmetics,” said Oakley CEO Colin Baden.

Oakley True Digital Edge increases the prescription range up to +4.00D and up to -6.00D with a minimum 120-degree binocular field of view. Oakley technologies virtually eliminate the peripheral distortion that can result when prescriptions are applied to high-wrap lenses, the company said.

Oakley’s process begins by reformulating the prescription using Oakley True Digital (OTD) technology to optimize clarity and accuracy of vision from the center of the lens to the edge, even for extreme-wrap sunglasses. Oakley Thin-Zone processes follow, and Oakley is able to thin the lens edge by as much as 40 percent to enhance aesthetics, safety and comfort of vision. The finishing stage entails a frost treatment to block any visual noise and/or distortion. ■
