Blue Light Protection Lenses

According to the American Optometric Association’s (AOA) 2014 American Eye-Q survey, 55 percent of adults use computers, smartphones, tablets or other hand-held devices for five or more hours a day. These devices emit high-energy blue light which has been shown to cause a number of health risks including disruption of the sleep cycle and the early onset of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Blue light blocking lenses, like Essilor’s Prevencia and VSP’s Unity with BluTech technology from Eye Solutions Technologies, filter high-energy blue and ultra-violet light to reduce the harmful effect on the eyes.

Complete Family Vision Care, San Diego, Calif.

“Everybody is on the computer all day and take breaks to get on their phones. This is a huge opportunity for ECPs across the country.”

What are you selling?
We are selling several computer glasses with BluTech or Prevencia lenses. Using doctor driven dispensing and prescribing it in the exam room, is the best way to educate patients. The doctor is prescribing it; it’s the power of the pen.

Who’s buying it?
Everybody that uses a computer. We are targeting the patients who are on the computer, especially kids and young adults, as a way to prevent problems down the road. We have a flyer in the room and have sent out e-mail blasts to patients. We also prescribe Transitions lenses for them if they read outside a lot, especially here in San Diego.

Why do they like it?
In today’s world, everyone is on the computer and everyone is becoming more concerned about what the computer does. I ask patients, when you take a break do you go on your phone, well that is a computer. I want to get you a pair of computer glasses to help reduce eyestrain and also to help you sleep better by preventing the blue light from getting to your eyes.
