WATERLOO, Ontario—The latest update of the Ultimate Eye Science Game, CORE Knowledge 2.0, is now available at COREKnowledgeGame.org. With the addition of nearly 100 new topics and a reset leader board, its creators ask: who will become the top-ranked players among the global optometry and ophthalmology communities? The online game debuted at ARVO in 2018 and has since been played by thousands of practitioners, researchers, educators, students and ophthalmic industry professionals across six continents.

The fast-paced game was conceived and developed by the Centre for Ocular Research & Education (CORE) established at established in 1988 at the University of Waterloo’s School of Optometry & Vision Science.

During gameplay, when correct and incorrect answers are revealed, a CORE logo may appear next to results in which the organization played a role. CORE Knowledge presents competitors with a range of rapid-fire, multiple choice questions covering a wide variety of basic and clinical ocular research topics. Points are added and deducted as participants race a two-minute clock, tapping their screens to correctly answer as many questions as possible before time runs out.

For almost three years, Rajini Peguda, a postdoctoral Research Fellow at the School of Optometry and Vision Science at UNSW Sydney remained atop the leader board. She was joined by both prominent and emerging professionals in ocular health and science. With past scores zeroed out, the door is open to get on the board and claim bragging rights for organizations, schools and companies.

“We have been delighted to see how colleagues around the world have incorporated CORE Knowledge into their continuing education plans, curricula, and other programs. Considering our largely virtual environments in which we are working, learning, and socializing, the time is right for CORE Knowledge 2.0,” said Lyndon Jones, PhD, FCOptom, VAAO, FCLA, CORE's director.

“As every question flashes on the screen, we’re reminded how much ocular science has advanced over the past several decades, with CORE and our partners being at the heart of many developments. Of course, this isn’t only about recognizing those discoveries; it’s about having a bit of fun in the process by going head-to-head with colleagues and friends in our field.”
