When searching for the most daring store design, retail environment, merchandising and/or window display, the eyes of 2012’s D.A.R.E. Awards judging panel repeatedly returned to Europtics. After opening a new flagship, the store’s fifth location in the Denver area, Europtics changed their look and even their tagline to “The Art of Optics”—and kept their word.

With over 1,000 frames displayed within the practice’s modern glass décor, it was clear to see Europtics called for customers to Shop It Like It’s Hot. Covering the windows with glasses-clad adaptations of iconic paintings—shoppers can peer and be peered at by the likes of Van Gogh’s Self-Portrait, Vermeer’s Girl With A Pearl Earring and yes, even da Vinci’s Mona Lisa—truly made an impression, and to properly attire such artistic works, staff adorned the painted faces with representations of artistic eyeglass styles like those of Etnia, Anne et Valentin and several others.

As stated in the submission essay, Europtics “throws out the conventional and reinvents the retail optical store” and provides “an exciting new look for the optical retailer and the industry.” ■
