Then and Now: Red Carpet Eyewear Trends Making a Comeback

NEW YORK—Awards show season is wrapping up, with the final big red carpet being rolled out at the Dolby Theatre tomorrow for the Oscars. While we will all be on the lookout for those one-of-a-kind Dior, Zac Posen and Versace couture gowns, it’s worthwhile to also be on the lookout for some looks that feature eyewear. As I stated in my editor’s column in our February issue, it seems as though when it comes to talking accessories, eyewear gets the short-end of the stick. After any given awards show, stylists and celebrities alike will tag their earrings, bags, shoes, necklaces and watches, but trying to find an ID for a pair of glasses is almost herculean.

How well do you need to see in order to drive a car? In the early days of driving in the U.S., licenses to operate a motor vehicle could be purchased for fifty cents, no vision tests required. In Georgia, you could get your license by mail and in Missouri you could buy a driver’s license at the gas station. Looking back, it’s easy to laugh at the laxness of these rules.
