NEW YORK—Vision Monday and 20/20 Magazine are hosting the 10th annual EyeVote Reader’s Choice Awards to identify the optical industry’s favorite products and companies this year. These two Jobson Medical Information publications are teaming up once again this fall to get readers’ opinions by asking optical retailers’ and ECPs to identify their favorite products in 14 distinct categories: optical frames, spectacle lenses, sunglasses, Rx sun lenses, contact lenses, optical equipment, optical supplies, diagnostic equipment, practice management software, EHR software, online ordering website, patient engagement systems, dispensing/measuring fitting systems and Social Purpose missions. Voting for EyeVote is officially open and will take place through Nov. 7.

Years of Preparation Lead to Fast Cold Start for One OD

Amina Ebrahim, OD, started working in an optometry office at the age of 16 to see if it was a good fit after a career aptitude test matched her love of numbers and logic to optometry. Shadowing the optometrist also showed her what was involved beyond the clinical side of practice. After graduating from the Illinois College of Optometry, she started off her career employed by Luxottica, filling in at several LensCrafters locations and her friend’s Costco sublease. She then secured a brand-new Costco sublease and built that practice from scratch. That location also increased her confidence with electronic medical records, billing and managing staff. Following a move to Dallas, Texas, she realized it was time to put down some professional roots and open up a practice with her husband.
