Unique, Tri-Tinted Sun Lens Offers Glare Relief and Improved Contrast

Quick Take: Sky Sight Vision of Tulsa, Okla. has developed a sunglass lens that reduces glare and improves viewing between contrasting scenes.
Wearer: Designed for pilots, drivers, boaters and post-mydriatic patients, the tri-tinted lens features a darkly tinted zone for distance viewing, a lightly tinted zone for intermediate viewing and a moderately tinted zone for near viewing.
Specifics: The lens had a 13 percent transmittance in the far field, 94 percent transmittance in the intermediate field, and 29 percent transmittance in the near field. Illumination in the far field is 710 lux (viewing over the nose of the aircraft), the intermediate field is 2 lux (viewing the instrument panel) and the near field 20 lux (viewing an approach chart).
Selling Points: “A characteristic of this visual environment is the far field illumination easily can be 100 to 1,000 times brighter than the instrument panel. Thus, a person who experiences glare can find the illumination from the glare is a bright as the instruments,” said Sky Sight Vision’s Ray Hobbs, who is a pilot.

Quick Take: Johnson & Johnson Vision Care announced the U.S. launch of Acuvue Vita brand, a 30-day daily wear contact lens.
Wearer: Those who wear contacts long-term and are seeking lenses with more comfort and hydration.
Specifics: The lenses feature new HydraMax Technology that provides superior comfort all month long over other leading monthly brands, according to J&J. HydraMax is a non-coated silicone hydrogel formulation that helps maximize and maintain lens hydration for a month. It enhances comfort through a unique “Infinity Edge” design and blocks approximately 93.4 percent of UVA rays and 99.8 percent of UVB.
Selling Points: “Optimal hydration was our goal for this new innovation,” said Peter Shen, PhD, vice president, worldwide research and development, Johnson & Johnson Vision Care. “The HydraMax Technology in Acuvue Vita helps maximize lens hydration by integrating the maximum amount of hydrating agent in this lens and then, maintains hydration through optimal density and distribution of beneficial lipids throughout this lens. “The material in Acuvue Vita, senofilcon C, is designed to integrate the optimal density and distribution of beneficial lipids throughout the lens, while maintaining a low deposition profile, J&J said.
