Top Line: Reliance Medical Products, a division of Haag-Streit AG which makes chairs, stools, and instrument delivery systems for medical practices, has produced a video that offers a peek inside its manufacturing process.
Close Up: The video opens with historic images of the factory’s earliest days in 1898. More than a century later, Reliance still crafts its chairs and instrument stands entirely by hand. From cutting 14-ply birch into chair seats with a tensile strength stronger than steel, to painting the metal exteriors and sewing the upholstery, everything happens in a single, Mason, Ohio, factory.
Components for each, individual order are sorted into batches. Viewers can see every aspect of the assembly process, starting with the raw materials. They go inside the wood shop, paint room, upholstery shop and computerized cutting stations, as a chair is built. Even the tools and the instruments used to calibrate the tools are on display.

Smart Mirror Releases Versatile iPad App

Top Line: ABS, Inc is releasing the Smart Mirror application for iPad. The app aids in eyewear selection, lenses education and multifocal measurements. It features fully interactive Augmented Reality for consumer-oriented sales consultations.
Close Up: The Smart Mirror app takes pictures and five seconds videos of patients to help them select their frame. They can see themselves wearing up to four frames on the screen and compare them. Pictures and videos can be e-mailed to the patient or be used to update their Facebook page.
The app will educate the patient about refractive vision disorders, anti-reflective lenses, photochromic lenses, digital surfacing, polarized lenses and other products. Using the Smart Centration technology, the app will take accurately fitting height, bridge, panto, near and far PD.

Top Line: Practical Systems, Inc. (PSI) is introducing Sure-Lock Hydrophobic Gripping Discs which are made of a unique material that aids in edging lenses, including lenses with super-hydrophobic coatings.
Close Up: Sure-Lock is a clear, oval disc that is placed directly on the lens. The blocking pad is placed on top of the disc. Sure-Lock’s adhesive provides a strong bond with the lens and a stable base for the blocking pad to adhere to without torquing. They are easily removed with the finger-lift tab provided. Sure-Lock Discs can also be used on the back-side of the lens to protect the lens from the edger chuck. The transparent nature of the disk makes it easy to see layout markings underneath.
