PSI Debuts Cost-Effective Coolant Filtration System
Product: Coolant Filtration System (CFS)
Top Line: PSI’s Coolant Filtration System (CFS), manufactured by Losma, removes fine and abrasive lens particles from coolant for digital and conventional lens processing generating and edging, eliminating blocked jets and premature pump failure. These units do not require manual cleanout of sediment, which reduces machine downtime. Filtering the coolant reduces coolant and disposal costs, along with extending the life of cutting tools and wheels. Using a CFS will improve the lens finish and quality as well as lab cleanliness and odor control creating a better working environment. These modular units are self-contained, keeping all the liquid inside the tank and not on the lab floor.
Close Up: The SPRING-F5, seen at Vision Expo East, has a drum filter complete with a fixed filtering membrane for the removal of lens resin from coolant so no consumable filters are needed. It accommodates three to four generators. The coolant flows through a drum filter and then into a separate clean tank and sent back to the generator, while the lens resin builds up on the drum and provides additional filtering. Once the coolant in the filtering tank rises and trips a float sensor the drum automatically rotates and is sprayed with coolant from the clean tank to clean the top portion of the drum. When the drum rotates, the resin sinks to the bottom of the tank and is then dragged into the auger, is compressed and falls into a receptacle on the outside of the machine.

Younger Optics Launches Camberlens.com
Top Line: Younger Optics has launched a
website, to explain Camber, its innovative new lens technology that combines complex curves on both surfaces of the lens to provide excellent vision correction.
Close Up: Younger Optics developed Camber Technology in order to improve the performance of digital progressive lenses by providing the ideal base curve in all zones of the lens. Camber Technology utilizes a unique new lens blank with a variable base curve, which means the front surface increases in optical power from the top to the bottom of the lens blank. This provides the appropriate base curve from the distance zone to the near zone, Younger said.
Wearers experience better vision in all zones compared to lenses made from single vision blanks. This includes an improved reading area that is more spacious and easier to find with the eye. In general, patients show faster adaptation, according to a wearer study. Camber lenses are fully customizable; variables that affect vision can be individualized to patient. In a wearer study, more wearers preferred Camber lenses to lenses of the same design made from single vision blanks, according to Younger Optics.
Camber lens blanks were designed with digital processing in mind. Camber lens blanks are convenient to stock, just like single vision blanks, but with higher levels of performance for the patient. Camber technology allows labs to provide premium quality digital lenses as part of their private label offering.
ECPs can give their patients better looking lenses with fewer frame limitations. Camber lenses tend to be flatter, especially for high plus and high add prescriptions, so these patients will receive more cosmetically appealing lenses with easier frame selection.

Jeanie Premium Expands Diamond Tool Family
Product: JP Gold LL47
Top Line: Minnesota-based Jeanie Premium Products is launching the newest member of its diamond tool family, the JP Gold LL47. Labs report it is the longest lasting diamond they have used, according to the company. Extended life has reportedly been two to four times the life over their previous natural and synthetic turning tools (“Fast Cutter/Fine Tool”).
Close Up: The JP Gold LL47 has been used on a variety of materials—primarily a mix of standard plastic, polycarbonate and high-index. Each lab said found the “sweet spot” with the number of cuts they can expect, depending upon variables such as operators, coolant flow, chiller temperature and capacity for the number of machines served. Introducing this new diamond into their lens manufacturing process, the labs experienced much less initial cost, less down time due to an increase in the number of runs/number of cuts (which resulted in less change-outs), fewer relaps needed in between change-outs, and more lenses per tool—all without compromising lens quality. Consequently, productivity increased and unit cost dropped significantly. The labs are running 3,000 to 10,000 plus cuts versus over 1500 to 4500 cuts previously, according to Jeanie.
