Product: SafiloX
Top Line: Last week at CES 2017 in Las Vegas, Safilo Group and Interaxon, a developer of brain-sensing technology for consumers, introduced SafiloX, a new eyewear platform that combines the latest brain-sensing and cognitive training technology into lifestyle eyewear in the Safilo portfolio, which includes brands such as Smith, Carrera and Polaroid.
Close Up: The first product built on the new platform is Smith’s Lowdown Focus Mpowered by Muse. Designed for athletes and outdoor enthusiasts, the new smart sunglasses integrate Interaxon’s Muse brain-sensing technology into Smith Lowdown frames to deliver cognitive training technology via stylish, everyday eyewear.
Lowdown Focus Mpowered by Muse’s frames includes brainwave-sensing EEG, EOG and EMG technology as well as other sensors, including a three-axis accelerometer, a three-axis gyro, a three-axis magnetometer, a UV sensor (UVA and UVB), a temperature gauge and a pressure sensor, providing an upgrade path for applications via an open SDK. The app developed to work with Lowdown Focus Mpowered by Muse will initially focus on helping users engage in regular cognitive training, with special features to enhance energy management and attention immediately before competition and exercises to reintegrate into daily conditioning.
Vital Stats: The Smith Lowdown Focus glasses look like a pair of regular sunglasses. All technical aspects (electronic board and battery) have been miniaturized and seamlessly integrated into the design of the frame.
There are two sensors on the temple tips and three sensors on the nose pad which detect brainwaves and eye movement. The sunglasses connect via Bluetooth and use an app that allows users to monitor the pattern of their brain activity to meditate, improve mental focus and performance. The sunglasses also feature additional sensors such as UVA and UVB, temperature, gyroscope and magnetoscope. These will allow the development and integration of many other applications in the future, according to Safilo and Interaxon.
Smith will launch the glasses in Summer, 2017 with a suggested retail price of $350. They will also be available online via the e-commerce website. More information and materials are available for download here.

PogoTec Unveils PogoCam, an Attachable Eyewear Camera

More Images
Product: PogoCam
Top Line: PogoTec has entered into strategic partnerships with leading designers and marketers of prescription and non-prescription eyewear to manufacture and distribute compatible frames for PogoCam, a small wearable camera attachable to eyewear. The Roanoke, Va.-based startup, along with four partners— FGX International, ClearVision Optical, Argus Vision and Vista Eyewear—unveiled PogoCam last week during CES 2017 in Las Vegas.
Close Up: PogoCam is designed to attach magnetically to frames having PogoTrack technology, a proprietary universal platform for a wide range of compatible wearables. The display featured:
• 12 styles of Foster Grant sunglasses by FGX International (six styles in two colors each);
• 12 styles of Ocean Pacific eyewear from ClearVision Optical in both prescription optical and sunglass categories;
• A complete line of Argus Vision sunglasses in a rugged and lightweight wrap design; and
• Designs from Vista Eyewear, an award-winning Italian designer and manufacturer known for handmade frames that combine forward-looking fashion, technology and innovative materials.
Vital Stats: PogoCam utilizes a proprietary new electronic architecture that allows the highest level of miniaturization with lower power requirements than competitive cameras for the same level of high image resolution, memory capacity and performance, according to PogoTec. It comes equipped with a five megapixel sensor providing quality photos or video that the company said is comparable to a smartphone. The camera is resistant to water and perspiration.
Weighing less than two dimes and measuring 10.9 x 12.5 x 42.8 mm, PogoCam attaches magnetically to eyewear having a proprietary track called PogoTrack. PogoCam allows a user to capture images and video with audio taken by a typical user during the course of a day. PogoCam allows people to “look and shoot” up to 100 photographs or two minutes of continuous HD video with audio (or 12 ten second clips). When in use, the camera displays a visible courtesy light that blinks allowing those being photographed to know. When not in use it can be slid back on the track or easily removed. An accompanying mobile app provides auto centering, auto alignment and image rotation, eliminating the need for a camera viewfinder by automating certain post processing adjustments normally required for manual cameras.
The camera is activated by pressing a single button. Images are uploaded to a mobile device. The camera function is focus free and features auto white balance. A small smart case is included with each PogoCam that can recharge the camera up to five times in as little as 35 minutes for each recharge cycle. The case also transmits images and video wirelessly to the user’s smartphone via Bluetooth and backs up images to its internal memory chip.
PogoCam and PogoTrack will be available at thousands of consumer locations in 2017, including eyecare offices, optical shops, big box and specialty stores in the U.S., PogoTec said. PogoCam and well-known branded non-prescription sunglasses with PogoTrack will be bundled for sale on the PogoCam ecommerce site, www.PogoCam.com and www.Amazon.com. Rx eyewear with PogoTrack will also be available in optical shops and eyecare offices in 2017, PogoTec said. Additional channel partners are being added for 2018 and beyond. PogoCam, including its wireless smart case and other accessories will have a suggested retail price of $149.00.
PogoCam will be launched on March 30, 2017 at the International Vision Expo East Conference in New York.

Eyefinity Cuts Clicks With Updated EHR

Product: Eyefinity EHR
Top Line: New updates to Eyefinity EHR have streamlined workflow to decrease clicks/taps, making it one of their EHRs with the fewest clicks.
Close Up: Eyefinity EHR offers time saving features and convenience in recent releases. Exam protocols allow an optometrist to quickly complete an exam in less than five minutes by tailoring exams to a doctor’s preferred plans and procedures. In one click, a doctor can see all of his or her patient’s refraction history on a single page and import into any screen where there’s a prescription. For a quick overview of patient info, one tap of the patient’s name will bring up patient details, such as insurance, the primary care physician, and the preferred pharmacy.
Vital Stats: Combined with built-in adaptive learning technology that enables Eyefinity EHR to learn and adapt to the way each doctor in an office practices, from plans, diagnoses, and prescriptions, a doctor’s most commonly used options quickly populate, eliminating the need to scroll to find what’s needed. These new features significantly reduce clicks/taps. Click here to learn more.
