With September underway, I’ve come to recognize this time of year as a series of hellos and goodbyes. As we move through the last vestiges of summer, perhaps sneaking in one last family trip or one more stroll on the beach, we look also toward autumn—one foot resting in summer, and the other taking a step toward fall. It is, for sure, a time of transition.

Preparing for our annual ‘Most Influential Women’ issue marks an exciting time in the halls of
Vision Monday. Regardless of having celebrated this report for 22 years and shining a spotlight on the amazing work of nearly 800 women within this time frame, the exciting and gratifying feelings the
VM team gets when receiving hundreds of nominations for female leaders within our industry never gets old. As a newcomer to the industry (I still get to say that, at least for now), I, too, am in awe of the inspiring stories that showcase the work women are doing and the contributions being made across all facets of our industry.

When I was in high school, I had a book titled, “50 Simple Things You Can Do to Save the Earth.” It had been published a few years prior, and was a guidebook of sorts for those of us who were, or who were trying to be, environmentally minded. After the title was first released around Earth Day 1990, it soon became a bestseller, and has since been reissued numerous times in various iterations and translated into approximately 20 different languages. I recall that the book offered practical tips, giving guidance on actionable steps such as composting, recycling, and trying to use less gas.

As 2024 gets underway, investors remain optimistic about opportunities in the vision care space. The U.S. population continues to grow and age, creating a robust environment for optometry and optometric practices, according to industry experts. They note that a rising need for eyecare and eye health services, fueled by growth in the population of patients aged 65 years and older, continues to make the landscape a stable and attractive target for those who are looking to invest, or to grow their career.

As 2024 gets into full swing, the topic of artificial intelligence (AI) is everywhere. Taking a look at the examination of AI at some of the major meetings and shows to date—‘The AI-Powered Organization’ at The Vision Council Executive Summit, ‘Putting the Eye in AI: The Future of Artificial Intelligence in Optometry’ at SECO, and, more recently, ‘What’s Your AI Acuity? Sharpening a Vision for the Future!’ at the Vision Monday Leadership Summit—you will see that these multifaceted and multi-layered approaches to exploring AI have informed talks and presentations that filled a couple of hours to nearly a full day.

While many of us likely haven’t considered this question in recent years, it is something that continues to be relevant today. As we progress in life and in our careers, it is likely that we will be—or have been—presented with countless opportunities to learn, be it new skills, technologies, or ways of working. And, for many of us, it is also likely that how we learn now as an adult is quite different than how we learned as kids.

Grateful and inspired. As the new year gets underway, these are the feelings I keep coming back to. In January I joined Vision Monday and 20/20 as editorial director, and soon after headed to The Vision Council Executive Summit as a first-time attendee. While there, I was quickly inspired by the camaraderie and professionalism among attendees representing so many corners of the vision care industry, and by presenters who, as veterans of their trade, generously shared their expertise.
