Product: mEYE Guide
Top Line: In an effort to turn long and often complicated conversations about myopia management into short, simple conversations, Ocumetra has released a new tool for practitioners: mEYE Guide.
Close Up: It can be difficult to justify a completely new means of myopia treatment to patients and parents. Myopia symptoms can be readily managed by conventional treatments, so the need for more invasive treatments, which can be more expensive, less convenient (e.g. putting in eye drops every night for several years), and without immediate visual benefit, need to be explained and justified to parents.
The new mEYE Guide provides a solution to these challenges using intuitive data and graphical outputs that illustrate the risks of myopia and the benefits of myopia management. The tool has been designed to explain a child’s refraction status in simple terms that resonate strongly with parents. The mEYE Guide simplifies the conversation, allows practitioners to illustrate and rationalize treatment decisions to patients, and provides a means to maximize treatment uptake and retention.
Vital Stats: The mEYE Guide report is divided into two key sections. The first section provides clinical outputs that illustrate the need for and benefits of treatment to parents and patients. These allow parents to understand what their child’s refraction really means in terms of risks to vision and eye health. The second section provides additional information for parents, including what myopia control treatments are available and what else they can do to optimize their child’s myopia progression, such as spending more time outdoors and screen time usage. The mEYE Guide report is instantly shareable to parents’ smartphones via QR code.
Key features:
• Refraction Centile Charts help parents understand the meaning of their child’s refraction, illustrate why treatment is necessary, and show them what will happen without treatment.
• Child’s current centile—illustrates how this child’s myopia compares to other children the same age and sex.
• Projected Adult Refraction—based on the child’s centile position, this shows parents how much their child’s prescription is likely to deteriorate by age 20 without myopia control treatment.
• Vision Simulator shows parents how their child sees now without their glasses and compares it to how they will see as an adult if their myopia is allowed to progress without myopia control treatment.
• Myopia Control Benefits helps parents understand the benefits of myopia control.
• Progression Index—illustrates that a child is more likely to need stronger glasses next year without myopia control.
• Ocular Health Index—demonstrates how myopia control can reduce a child’s lifetime risk of developing myopia-related eye disease.
• mEYE Guide provides patients and their parents with personalized myopia reports.
• Additional Reading for Parents helps parents understand this new area of eye care for children.
• About Myopia Management—includes everything a parent might want to know about myopia management in one convenient place.
• Myopia Control Treatment Options—are parent-friendly explanations of what myopia control treatments are available and how they can optimize their child’s risks for myopia.
The mEYE Guide provides clinicians with effective communication tools that turn a long and potentially complex conversation with parents into a short and effective one. This helps to address one of the common fears about embracing myopia control, the impact on “chair time.” The mEYE Guide answers the key questions every parent needs answered before committing to myopia control.
