RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif.—VSP Ventures said Thursday that it has acquired Redhawk Vision Center in Temecula, Calif. The practice was founded in 1999 by the husband-and-wife team of Donny Broyles, OD, and Sonya Hooks-Broyles, OD. The terms of the transaction were not disclosed. Redhawk Vision Center will continue to operate under its existing name, and all doctors and practice staff will remain in their roles, the VSP Ventures announcement noted. Earlier this month, VSP Ventures (a division of VSP Global) announced the acquisition of University Optometry, a boutique optometry practice based in Palo Alto, Calif, as VMAIL reported.

“Providing comprehensive eyecare to our patients has always been our passion, and we wanted to find a partner that aligned with that while supporting our transition out of the day-to-day management of the business,” Dr. Broyles said in the announcement. “VSP Ventures was a great match for our practice, offering the right support and tools that allow us to do what we do best—deliver great patient care.”

The practice includes a focus on co-managing refractive surgery patients as well as offering specialty contact lenses for patients with corneal irregularities. Dr. Hooks-Broyles is a graduate of New England College of Optometry and Dr. Broyles received his Doctor of Optometry degree at the University of Houston College of Optometry. He is an active member of the American Optometric Association, California Optometric Association and National Optometric Association.

“The Redhawk Vision Center team is highly regarded for their focus on comprehensive patient care and we’re honored that they have selected us to partner with,” VSP Ventures president Steve Baker said in the announcement. “We continue to see great interest from doctors who are looking to transition their practice with a partner like VSP Ventures, who shares their care-focused values.”

Dr. Hooks-Broyles said she believes that by partnering with VSP Ventures the practice has an opportunity to build upon the strong foundation it’s established over the past two decades. “Together, we’re poised to meet the growing eyecare needs of our patients for many more years,” she added.

VSP Global launched VSP Ventures in March 2019, as VMAIL reported, as part of an expanded retail strategy that also included plans to open three brick-and-mortar Eyeconic optical locations. VSP Ventures is designed to offer “a care-focused choice for doctors looking to transition their practices,” the company said at the time.

VSP Ventures' other deals this year include the acquisition (in August) of six Nevada offices of EyeZone, and a joint-venture arrangement (announced in June) with Rosin Eyecare of Chicago that acquired two practices in Nashville, Tenn.
