Additional Presbyopia Solutions: clariti 1 day multifocal, Biofinity Biofinity Multifocal, Biofinity Toric Multifocal

PRACTITIONER’S POINT OF VIEW:
“We've had some incredible success with the CooperVision MyDay multifocal as a dealing modality from a company vision and patient response standpoint. And what I find absolutely astonishing in the Biofinity toric multifocal which is absolutely a parameter range there's almost no one you cannot evaluate for that lens. In addition, they have spherical version, and it's the most customizable lens in terms of the amount of new correction in which you can employ a to a dual design with both the distance center and near center designed in sometimes from an engineering standpoint, it blows my mind that we're able to pull it off.”

SNAPSHOT: Varilux Comfort Max

Manufacturer: Essilor

Description: Varilux Comfort Max lenses are built on the core principles of the Varilux Comfort design: easy to fit, easy adaptation, and no additional measurements required. This premium progressive lens from Essilor stretches the useful vision zone to bring all day long vision comfort and postural flexibility to progressive wearers. Varilux Comfort Max lenses bring flexibility and all-day long vision comfort. Powered by new Flex Optim technology, Varilux Comfort Max lenses are “a tailor-made solution which stretches a wearer’s useful vision zone by up to 46 percent, granting the wearer the postural flexibility to see a given focal point from many angles,” according to Essilor. The Varilux Comfort Max lens design is rooted in the patented LiveOptics process which provides in-depth knowledge of wearers’ visual needs and behaviors, defining multiple vision profiles based on each wearer’s addition and ametropia. Essilor’s proprietary Flex Optim technology then adjusts the power progression curve to each prescription, achieving optimal equilibrium across vision zones for each individual wearer.

PRACTITIONER’S POINT OF VIEW: “For emerging presbyopes we use Varilux Comfort DRx or Varilux Comfort Max because it's the easiest transition from a single vision or Eyezen lens. I try to use the strongest Eyezen first then go to the Comfort lens. It has a wide field of view and easy adaptability with virtually no non-adapts. For advanced presbyopes the Comfort is great too, but we use a lot of the Varilux X design due to its great optics and wide field of view. It’s also great for computer vision.”—Aleksandra Wianecka, OD, Vision for Life, Babylon, N.Y.

SNAPSHOT: iD MyStyle 2

Manufacturer: Hoya Vision Care

Description: Dual surfaced utilizing Hoya’s iD technology

• Provides clearer optics

• Offers comfortable reading zones by taking advantage of Hoya’s Binocular Harmonization Technology (BHT), which considers the prescription for the right and left eyes as individual components to calculate the optimal binocular lens design. This ensures that the power distribution and progressive corridor of each lens is exact according to the needs of each eye. The result is perfect and effortless focusing, constant stability and excellent depth of vision, according to Hoya.

• Creates a more personalized experience by offering four unique lens designs tailored to the patient’s lifestyle:

o The iD MyStyle 2 Modern: Hoya’s most popular convenience option, this design is balanced, works for many different tasks, is great for indoor and outdoor use, and provides clarity at all distances.

o The iD MyStyle 2 Adventure: This design has a strong emphasis on the distance viewing area — with near perfect edge-to-edge clarity. It’s the perfect design option for outdoor enthusiasts, mail carriers, truck drivers, pilots — those who spend a lot of time outdoors. This convenience option is designed with distance viewing in mind.

o The iD MyStyle 2 Detail: This design is a great option for indoor use and is designed with an emphasis on the near and intermediate zones. It’s best for those focusing on near tasks and spending long hours on the computer or on hobbies that require a lot of up-close work.

o The iD MyStyle 2 Stable: This option is primarily used for indoor use with an increased distance zone and has a small, quick intermediate zone. It is designed for the mature presbyopes that read often yet benefit from an increased distance area to move about safely. Because of the fast transitioning between zones this lens is a great choice for flat top bifocals who are interested in switching to a progressive.

Practitioner’s Point of View: “My preferred, broad purpose progressive is the Hoya iD MyStyle 2. The design is based on an algorithm that takes into account the wearer’s lifestyle. I'll often ask my patients, ‘What is it that you look at the most?’ And it’s different for a pilot than, let's say, an electrical engineer. This lens works for a wide range of patients.”—Josh Rajasansi, OD, Experts on Sight, Gilbert, Ariz., Mesa, Ariz.

SNAPSHOT: Camber Steady Plus

Manufacturer: IOT

Description: Camber Steady Plus Progressive lenses are the most advanced progressive lenses ever developed by IOT. The lenses combine a digital freeform backside built on IOT’s new proprietary IOT Digital Ray-Path 2 Technology, and the Camber lens blank made by Younger Optics. Camber lenses offer better vision in all zones, an improved reading area that is more spacious and easier to find, and faster adaptation for most wearers, according to IOT.

PRACTITIONER’S POINT OF VIEW: When recommending a lens for an emerging presbyope, optician Ed Marshall often relies on the Recruit, a private label lens produced by his wholesale lab, Laramy-K. “For emerging presbyopies, I recommend Recruit (a private label lens produced by wholesale lab, Laramy-K.) It’s part of their Integrity freeform line, and features Camber technology, which is a design developed by IOT combined with a lens blank from Younger Optics. It’s a soft design that’s supposed to make it a little easier for presbyopes to get into a firsttime progressive. That’s the first choice. It’s as advanced a technology as anything else we’re working with. It really can’t be underestimated. I’ve never had a patient go back to their old lens after wearing Camber.”—Ed Marshall, optician/co-owner of McNelly Optical, Annapolis, Md.

ECP RESOURCES:
IOT Lens Data Advisor (formerly EVOlens) is a platform that uses all wearer information, including previous lens experience, and wearer priorities to calculate the best possible design for each individual patient. It also tracks wearer satisfaction and utilizes machine learning to improve designs over time allowing an optical business to build their own design ecosystem and eliminate the need for generations of progressive lenses. We have recently added functionality for unique second pair calculations to the system. It is ideal for integrated retailers who wish to offer a unique patient experience with an ever-improving product line. IOT Lens Data Advisor also integrates with IOT Hub to offer businesses access to in-depth data for their consumers.

SNAPSHOT: Omnilux

Manufacturer: QLDS

Description: New spectacle lens which is described by QLDS as “a freeform multifocal that gives a single vision-like viewing experience with the performance of a multifocal lens and does not require the fitting height value.” The Omnilux lens is based on the Natural Additional Lens (NAL) eye-lens ergonomic model. Unlike progressive lenses, no fitting height measurement is needed when dispensing or ordering, and no adaptation period is required by the patient. In the lab it is edged and inspected just like a single vision lens, which improves production efficiency, reduces costly redos, and increases patient viewing comfort.

With no visible line, Omnilux lenses have the look of single vision lenses with the performance of a multifocal, according to QLDS. The lens offers wearers continuous sharp natural vision at any gaze from far distance to close near. The Omnilux visual field is funnel-shaped rather than hourglass, resulting in no swing or distortion.

Practitioner’s Point of View:
“I had a presbyopic patient who had a prescription with a -14.75D right eye, and the left eye was -4.00D. There was a significant difference in the prescription, usually something that would require a progressive lens or any kind of multifocal to have slab-off. I knew the patient's PD, so we cut the lenses, mounted them in a frame and mailed them to him in Florida. I was fully expecting him to not like them, but he said ‘These are the best lenses I’ve ever worn.’”

“It's the perfect lens if you’re selling multifocals online, because most online virtual try-on apps are not very good at measuring fitting height.”—John Bonizio, CEO of Metro Optics, Bronx, N.Y.

SNAPSHOT: Autograph Intelligence 2

Manufacturer: Shamir

Description: Shamir recently updated its flagship progressive, Autograph Intelligence, to meet the visual needs of today’s presbyopes. Following the initial launch of Autograph Intelligence in 2018, Shamir has gathered more data and findings to improve the performance and capabilities of this progressive lens design that evolves with the wearer’s visual age to adapt to everyday visual tasks involving smartphones, tablets, computer screens and laptops. The updated design offers advanced personalization using artificial intelligence and a wider digital zone. The result is a progressive lens that adapts to the wearer’s visual age while keeping up with their visual needs. Shamir recommends pairing Autograph Intelligence 2 with its new Glacier Expression AI coating.

Shamir Autograph Intelligence is supported by three proprietary technologies developed by Shamir.

• Eye-Point Technology AI utilizes Head Eye Integrative Movement software to see exactly where in the lens patients look, along both the vertical and horizontal meridian, when they perform tasks in the various visual zones.

• Continuous Design Technology integrates research findings with patient habits and visual needs to provide a seamless lens for every Visual Age. This allows the patient to comfortably move from one add to the next without any adaption concerns.

• Visual AI Engine applies elements of Artificial Intelligence that mimic human intelligence. It makes go/no-go decisions based on predefined rules, and the output ensures uniform and controlled planning for any combination of parameters with extreme accuracy for each new lens design.

PRACTITIONER’S POINT OF VIEW:
“We probably are on board with Shamir Autograph Intelligence for 90 to 95 percent of our progressive lens wearers. It really depends on the person. We've rotated through the different designs of brands many times. But just our we find that we get the biggest wow factor with Shamir.

“We started using the new Autograph Intelligence 2 right away. The feedback so far has been good.”—Alex Feldman, co-owner, Alexander Daas stores in San Francisco, Calif., Los Angeles, Calif. and Del Mar, Calif.

SNAPSHOT: Camber Progressive

Manufacturer: Younger Optics

DESCRIPTION: Camber Technology combines complex curves on both surfaces of the lens to provide excellent vision correction. The unique, continuously changing surface curvature of the specially designed lens blank allows expanded reading zones with improved peripheral vision. When combined with a sophisticated back surface digital design, both surfaces work together to accommodate an expanded Rx range, offer better cosmetics (flatter) for many prescriptions, and yield user-preferred near vision performance.

Camber lenses are unique among digitally processed lenses, because every finished Camber lens starts out as a Camber semi-finished lens “blank,” manufactured by Younger Optics. This Camber lens “blank” has a variable base curve on the front surface that continually increases in diopter from top to bottom. IOT’s Camber Steady Plus design, or any Camber design for that matter (there are several), is processed at the lab onto the back side of the Camber lens blank. The resulting lens is a combination of the unique front surface made by Younger, and the free-form surface on the back side, designed by IOT.

While IOT may release new freeform designs into the marketplace, such as Camber Steady Plus, the semi-finished Camber lens blank from Younger Optics remains the original variable base curve design.

PRACTITIONER’S POINT OF VIEW: “The Camber lens has wider fields with very little if no swim or distortion. The transition from distance to near is a very easy, which is great for all wearers, especially new presbyopes. Most working people need more than one focal length corrected, so rather than struggling with separate pairs, this lens has made progressives easy to wear.

“I’m a hyperope +4.50 -100 cyl with a 2.75 add and I have clear vision throughout my lens. The optics is superb in my opinion. I try many lenses and this experience with Camber has been a wow.”—Sandra Schainkin-Scott, LDO, optician/owner, Seacrest Optical Delray Beach, Fla.

“IoT is number one number with their lens design, which works with the Younger Optics blank, which is part of the secret. That's as advanced a technology as anything else we're working with. It really can't be underestimated. I’ve never had a patient go back to their old lens from a Camber.”—Ed Marshall, optician and co-owner, McNelly Optical, which operates two locations in Annapolis, Md.

SNAPSHOT: SmartLife Lens Portfolio

Manufacturer: Carl Zeiss Vision

Description: SmartLife lenses from Carl Zeiss Vision feature a new lens design concept that addresses the evolving visual needs and challenges posed by today’s digital, busy lifestyle. The concept is based on SmartLife Technologies, a proprietary lens design technology developed to address the visual requirements of people interacting with their handheld devices.

The Zeiss SmartLife lens portfolio is designed around patients’ modern lifestyle with the goal of offering greater all-day comfort. The new portfolio is further fine-tuned by age group and visual requirements, from Gen Z to the Baby Boomer generation.

SmartLife lenses are based on four design principles that, in combination, meet the individual requirements of a dynamic, connected lifestyle for adults of all ages.

• Clear Optics provides precision in every step of lens design and fabrication.

• Thin Optics improves aesthetics by achieving the best in thin and light lenses.

• Smart Dynamic Optics and Age Intelligence establish a new technology platform called SmartView. These new technologies provide a new object space model that accounts for today’s visual dynamics while providing a smoother distribution of powers to improve vision during eye movements that cover a larger area of the lens. This is an adaptive lens design technology to address every visual stage of our life. Age Intelligence technology accounts for the change in pupil size according to the wearer’s age, and it is an important aspect of the SmartLife lens design concept. This new lens design method improves upon Zeiss Luminance Design Technology 2.0 by calculating dioptric powers using the entire beam of light passing through the pupil instead of using a chief ray without considering the real pupil diameter. SmartLife lens design technology determines pupil size by the wearer’s age. Age is compared to a table of expected values of pupil size, and the chosen pupil size is a parameter used in the lens design software optimization calculation to determine the prescription surface and generate a data points file for the application of the design to the lens surface. Pupil size as a parameter in lens surface calculations influences the targeted distribution of lens powers and viewing distances established by a new object-space model.

Additional Presbyopia Solutions:
Zeiss Officelenses, Zeiss Officelenses with Zeiss DuraVision BlueProtect UV

PRACTITIONER’S POINT OF VIEW: “Our doctors provide custom solutions and recommendations based off patient Individual assessment and exact fitting measurements. One particularly design we often recommend is the Zeiss Smartlife digital portfolio. SmartLife lenses are optimized for patients in the 25-to-45 age range who frequently use their mobile phones and tablets. Zeiss Smartlife lenses include ‘Age Intelligence’. They have researched the capabilities of adults of all ages to adapt each lens design according to changes in pupil size and accommodation depending on the patient’s age.

“Zeiss lenses are best-in-class. We use their top-of-the-line lens, the Smartlife Individual 2, quite a bit, especially when we get a challenging patient or somebody who has had significant non-adapts with other lens brands. That that's usually my go-to lens.”—Robert Chu, OD, managing director, EyeWorks, which operates three locations in the Ft. Worth, Texas area.
