The reason I want to talk about this isn't necessarily to dig into exactly how effective vaccines are. This is an area that's been trod upon multiple times. But it does give me an opportunity to talk about a neat study design called the "test-negative case-control" design, which has some unique properties when you're trying to evaluate the effect of something outside of the context of a randomized trial.
